This genre is too complex to make a 100% live act.
The best you could do is trigger samples, loops, send them to fx.... have stripped down versions of tracks and introduce into them the way u want it.

Another thing to note is that, a lot of people use midi controllers and stuff... but hardly anybody use the keys in them to play any notes. So my cent, if you want it to be more engaging, learn some music, learn to play the keyboard and then you could do a lot more! At least you could have a vst and play your leads in realtime. But then again... how many people in this scene do this ? So learn an instrument and you could definitely make it more engaging.. Preferably the keyboard.

So that being said, the most annoying and unprofessional thing that you could come across is the FAKE live acts just twisting and turning knobs for nothing!!!!

Couple of months back, a visiting act, and i tell u its quite a big name in the scene (not taking the name) required a midi controller for his so called LIVE set and the orgs wanted to use mine. So i was more than happy to give it. When i was at the party i could see him using the sliders and knobs, keys especially at breakdowns, using them as if he were Mozart or something....... and the next thing i noticed that the goddamn controller wasnt even connected to his laptop!!! I lost all my respect for this act.

So to put it in a nutshell, yes it cannot be 100% live, but yea u could make it more interactive and really interesting with a bit of effort and learning an instrument.

Period.

Yea for me the term 'live act' signifies that it's the artist's original work. This may not be the best term for it, something like 'original material' or 'own music' would be more precise, but doesn't quite have the same ring to it (anybody got a better suggestion?)

I agree 100000% with Braindrop. Having gear on stage simply to increase your bling factor is the dumbest thing you can do. If you can't operate the damn thing, get it the hell of the stage. 'Producer DJ set'. Save the word 'live' for... er... live music, maybe? In whatever form that live music takes? (realtime Abletonising, live instruments, or anything else in which the performer on stage audibly interacts with the music coming out of the speakers).

I'm practicing my fingering at 150bpm arpeggio so i can impress everyone at the dancefloor with my live leads. YEAH!

I do believe in magic (live psytrance)... is just that in electronica i don't care much bout performance, soz what i enjoy is the music itself.

As usual, nice points in this thread but i think it goes way beyond.

There is plenty people making good work in this area... OOOD i respect a lot, tom cosm is good and of course the full shpongle act and such but in a way i still see little or no future for this kind of performance in this kind of scene, that's why true performance usually move from the underground where usually there is not enough money / interest / appreciation for the kind of work required at a trance real live act.

When i'm ready i will think what can i do to perform live... still have lots of tracks to finish right now.

little to no future for live music in the psy scene? I sincerely hope you're horribly horribly wrong.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

I am trying! It will be a couple of years before I'm ready (if ever), but I am striving for as live an act as possible as I feel very strongly about it.

But...in the meantime can't I bitch about it at work on the interwebs?

Yeah, me too.
Believe me I would like to make it different, i just don't see the "scene" as fertile soil for this endevour.

Just because people are used to eating shit, doesn't mean they won't appreciate the time you take to make a healthy meal

Or so I would like to think. For sure its pretty pathetic right now.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

you can use the qwerty keyboard of your laptop..
"asdfghjkl" for white keys and "wetyu" I think, for black keys..
it's a way to type one octave melodies fast

Of course Slower tempo electro with minimal elements will give more time for "showing off" live situations, like that Gustavo Bravetti show where he pulls the plug and plays with the ground loop noise.

The thing is that you can really learn how to play some of your tracks live, introducing elements and playing certain riffs on the keyboard, its just a matter of practice. So dont go say anything else. and you dont have to play all tracks live, you can take a break while setting up for the next one.

And of course its more of a challenge to do it in 150bpm, But the main thing is that you Can Do it! You can figure out lots of ways to interact with your music... and it will not be in perfect timing maybe and things can go wrong. I Have nothing against fake live acts or pre recorded dj sets, cause when im at a party i want to dance and most probably close my eyes and just feel the music blasting at me and making me dance and trance.

I think This live hysteria is more for the artists and people that care too much about what the artists do when they play, its not so much about the music.... Cause to be honest nothing beats studio work with hours of well crafted sounds and automation lines smoothly tweaked and everything that has to do with precision!

Maybe for music that communicate and not express live interactions with sounds become more important, for example minimal progressive stuff. Just a thought.

For heavy trance inducing "close your eyes" type of journey stuff it really dont matter, i rather see the artist smoke a big chillum and mix so smooth as possible and blast me with the best sounds he got...

For cheesy melodic psytrance where the act is more about sex-appeal and style i think their fake live acts is as fake as their lifestyle.... hehe sorry i just had to say it

All in all if you feel you want to do live electronic music there is all the tools you need really all you have to do is get them and practice and come up with new and fresh ideas and innovations and please try and smile why you do it

take a look at NI maschine, my self i am trying to learn ableton live and playing around with scenes, triggering in realtime and tweaking effects and synths and playing live on keyboard... what i really would like is a Elektron Machinedrum or some other drum-machine that give lots of sequence and pattern possibilities

anyway check this out
