im almost finishing 7 tracks on cubase sx2 i intend to put into a live set using ableton live. ive heard many opinions about the need for mastering, some say do some say dont..let the professionals do it.
but for live performance i think i might want at least to get the same quality and volume levels... any opinions on this matter very welcome,, by the way i have decent souncard and studio monitors (Motu 828 MKII and Event Project Studio 8)
thanx jjj.. |

I guess the sound won't be the same when you're all set up for the live and press play on ableton. You could be dissapointed...
The thing is you have to spend lots of hours before the live, mixing and tweaking volume levels-eqs-filters whatever to get the sound you like...a rather stressfull and annoying process : /
I suggest buying or renting a compressor and an equaliser for mixing your tracks (especially if you're using hardware synths) and using the same on the live.
Anyways i'm no expert in that matter but i've come to this conclusion through the process of preparing for a live tweaking and mixing with some friends. This topic could be big help for me too. |

On the master output buss of Live, put the Steinberg Mastering Edition Loudness Maximiser followed by a Waves L2 limiter. I find that the MELM sounds best when only adding about 2dB of gain, and you should be able to add another 3dB with the limiter without it becoming too obviously squashed. These two plugins aren't TOO hungry for your CPU, either.
It's not the same as mastering but it will help your tracks get a good level. Be very careful not to compress too much though as over-limiting sounds awful and sucks all the energy out of a track. If your tracks are mixed well enough in the first place you shouldn't need an equaliser.
