I don't think you really understand the business models that a lot of these OSS companies operate under. Go read about how Shuttleworth is doing so well with Ubuntu or the model that Redhat started out with.

Well you missed my point because obviously there is a huge difference between business using linux(business who is going to have to hire an IT team to start with) vs a loan individual. If I owned a business I would have to consider using linux considering I would have to hire system admins no matter what I'm using to do the IT gruntwork. Linux /OSS strength is in areas where you are going to have to roll your own solution to some degree anyway, or where the software is mostly priced towards business and is going to be astronomically high(ie. going with mySQL instead of Oracle for a relational database)
This is a totally different ballgame though than the consumer audio market. If it cost $10k to build a good windows DAW then linux would be a sensible alternative...that simply is not the case though.
I also don't mean that someone has to pay purely monetary wise....people also pay with the amount of time they put into things.
I'm not new to this, I first tried to switch over to linux for audio under Redhat 4...that had to be 10 years ago now. While it doesn't sound like it takes 3 days to get the soundcard to work now like it did then all the other problems are still there...Those problems can't be resolved because they are inherent properties of the OSS philosophy. Half finished software, programmer minded GUIs as opposed to user minded GUIs, no support...
Its all a huge waste of time..there is windows and OSX for audio. If anything was ever going to displace those 2 it would have been BeOS and that was an incredible failure.

For all those who say bad about linux: go get yourself informed please.
Linux is a great operating system. It's the most user friendly, the easiest to use and the most powerful in giving control to the user.

If your soundcard crashes with windows drivers or just isn't compatible, I'd like to see what you will do. Theres no way for you to change anything in the back end. (And of course there are a lot of users who just donw care about how a OS works..)

OSx descended from BSD who descended from UNIX, which is the base for Linux. Since most hardware works for a mac, then it's got to work in linux. (And is there anybody out there running OSx down?? NO)

I use Linux in my regular day to day basis. I only have windows so I can program in assembler and to make music. I dont like Linux's way of making music, so I think it's a matter of choice! Choose whatever OS you want! (and if you want, choose not to use a computer at all to make music..) Start playing around and mixing and tweaking stuff. Expand your horizons and learn more with an open mind you should have over life..

if only you had witnessed how many hours of my life I had wasted with Linux. For me it was the least user friendly and the most difficult to use. I use both XP and OSX. Both are weak. My preference is with Windows though.           http://www.whatacunt.co.uk/
