Erhh..
I hardly agree with you.
It will be ready when the following companies will support it and release their products for Linux:
Steinberg, Creamware, RME, DigiDesign, Propellerheads, Native Instruments, Echo, M-Audio and the list probably goes on but you should get the point.
You can't get any near professional if you're platform isn't supported by any of the elite hardware vendors. Even if you have the greatest software that will enable you too make great music. You'll need the hardware to finalize the product.

Everyone would like to see MS fall and everybody would like to buy Linux for 10$ or download it for free but you know, Rome wasn't built in one day, and it takes time to infiltrate a product into saturated software market.
But let's wait and hope for the best.

I agree with all you guys! And think that we are far away from being able to campatibilize (nice word, huh?) everything into linux. I've worked with linux in the past and didnt find it very applicable to music. Anyways, in the future who knows... Very far away future imo though
  cna't find it |

I've worked with Linux and it was stable because everybody were afraid of it, and didn't want to touch anything but the necessary apps for work.
Unlike the Windows which everyone feel comfortable with and everybody like to play in the reg edit without knowing anything about it.

music creation little review with linux: this will sound like a promotion...i hate this
and it is little bit techy.
world domination
yes, linux will take over.
reasons - it:
1] is legally free [u can pay if u want to support, or do something more usefull - like beta testing, programming, or design]
2] is more stable
3] supports audio pro hardware [not all]
4] is much more configurable -
internally: if u don't want a USB driver workin while recording - u don't load it.
externally: more than 10 types of window managers [like windows shell extensions] each with its community and pile of themes..
can look like XP/Mac OSX/Amiga/BeOS/ whatever
5] you can improve it - simply e-mail the maintainer of your program and report a bug, or suggest a feature.
6] has large community - many forums, with lots of help to offer [look in tapuz/penguin/iglu/nana etc. - in hebrew ]
7] can live with your windows on parallel partition.
news
The next version of linux OS kernel [the main part of the OS that you don't see but use all the time] will have 2 very significant improvements for audio - 1 in drivers architecture, and 1 in the scheduling.. which directly reflects in responsiveness
[how do u feel the load by the speed of the GUI during audio work.]
software:
there are several audio/midi sequencers with diff. approach. there are several software synths [some of them even commercial]. dj example, if u know or not: the FinalScratch is actually linux based, yes, Traktor & Linux work together [and there is a OS X vesion]
yes, some of the programs have a lousy GUI... but if you know graphic design - refer to 1] in the beginning.
hardware supported now:
About cards officially supported: RME, M-Audio, Hootech, MOTU and many more cards.
my experience:
under linux in 1999 i could get audio latency of less than 4 ms with a keyboard, so go and figure what it can do with more than 32Mb of memory with more than P1 cpu, and with more than SB16.
About purely virtual audio work:
it is possible, but you will have to install much soft from the source... which sometimes takes more than typing commands or clicking mouse.
it is not all so blue and nice - there is a very steep learning curve. there are 2 options - either u'r a bit geek, and you know and learn how, or u hire one, because the installation takes some knowledge. but the good thing is that after it is installed, the only thing you have to worry about is... your health.
if u use the stable versions of all the system components and don't run all the pre-alpha stuff, it simply will work until u shut it down. note: all the rumours about linux freezings... yes it can be if u use an untested version of some system component. but u don't have to.
i'm talking about months of uptime with no reboot [unless electricity fails]
