For me linux is nowhere near ready for being an OS where you can produce serious music.

Very true.

I think it could be, though I have to say there is a barrier that needs to be over come. And that is the attitude of the Linux community, especially Ubuntu. Their hate for windows blinds them. They are so closed off to feedback and input from users that is is crazy when you consider the premise of open source software.

The point is simple your comparing linux that is free and microsoft that has gazillions of dollars worth resources.

Be realistic the day linux has even 1/100th the funding of what microsoft has and they use it solely to develop proper hardware support ubuntu will kicks windows ass in all ways possible security, stability. Beryl/Compiz kicks vista aero's ass in terms of graphics acceleration and the fact is linux uses 1/5th the hardware requirements to do all this.

But all depends on hardware support even for music production and MS with all the power they have will never let many hardware manufacturers support open source so its all a vicious moneymaking cycle by the big corps at the end of the day.          "Whoever said the best things in life are free... obviously grew their own bud"

I was being realistic.

Its the Ubuntu community that seemed unrealistic with their attitude. I am sorry if that's upsets you but that's just how it was for me. They seemed to busy hating on bill to actually move it forward. Shame because the concept of open source is a great one, but like so many great ideas they stay that way. Just a great idea.

They are moving forward but obviously the problem is MS. Dell went on to support Linux based hardware but no other company followed. Ms probably has such a big influence on all the companies why would they risk it.

I mean look at mac osx both ubuntu and osx are unix based only difference is apple had good resources to support it and today it is the most stable thing known for music production or any other pro purpose.

Ideally structure/stability wise and linux and osx are both unix based and very similar.
So basically the day hardware manufacturers start actually thinking outside the box and give linux the importance it deserves windows is no match.

Linux would have the stability/security of a unix system like osx + its free and customizable to the degree of knowledge the end user holds.

OSx is pretty idiot proof but XP will run more stable with music applications. I know as I have both and have had both for many years. That's why I was so disappointed with Ubuntu.

The whole windows is shit thing is crap. The fact that there is competition is why we have reasonable systems. Can you imagine how it would be if OSX wasn't there to push Windows and vice versa?

The trick with music applications is not to update your OS and be a bloody post beta tester. There is always a delay in the role out from the music apps.

The other thing that really bugs me is the whole windows and virus thing. No firewall on this computer (PC) or virus software. No need. Most people here in the UK use a reuter/ADSL box and so are already behind a firewall. The propaganda and fear mongering that the linux crowd spill is very annoying.

Linux is very limited for music production. That's just how it is. Lets not pretend otherwise.

Firstly lot of people especially music producers/designers in a/v industry seem to prefer osx to any windows version.
I have to agree for music production linux is not as mature as other os's since its free and does not have gazillions of dollars worth resources.

Linux programs requires beta testing since its new give it the amount of time and resources MS/Apple took to reach where they are today and you would not be paying for os software which would also be more stable than what your using today. It was bad luck that the world kept getting commercialized and people failed to extract the benefits of linux in the long run and majority jumped on MS bandwagon.
