well...
take boom for instance - i've only been to 2008 and 2010, but the lineup in both years was nowhere near having only famous names and there was plenty of room for surprises (for me the biggest surprise in 2010 was liftshift) - plenty of diversity right there...
i do have to agree about the majority of festivals tho...
btw kristian - is there anywhere we can listen to your new elysium stuff?
i've actually got quite nostalgic about trance africa express (not to mention ancient lands which was one of the first 3 tracks i remember recognizing as trance tho up until 2 years ago i knew it as the wolf track - and yes i know its as sheyba but still... these tracks have a very special place for me ) |

Why not, that's common to most psytrance parties and festivals in the US.

The last festival I played in Costa Rica, which was pretty cool to have been brought so far was a good example of what we are talking about. They brought me and wicked hayo. The promoter told me he brought wicked hayo to get the crowd and brought me to introduce them to something new. The party went great and was a really awesome experience for me. For someone new like myself its to my advantage to play at a party with well known acts and get some exposure to a bigger crowd, then if it was just me playing.
In the end, I love what I do know matter what, I love making music, so I feel the rest will follow if you stay true to your art.

cool and congrats on your success
IMO it has also something to do with what style of music you make. If you make progressive, psy-techno or darkpsy you have a much bigger chance than example Elysium which is ethnic tribal/Goa. I've even been offered to play in the chillout for 50 euro (in a foreign country) even though my latest remixes are 140 bpm...go figure
The point is also that genres that does not follow a certain trend wont get booked.

I'd say Ekoplex's sound is something outside the norm. It's like tribal morning.
I think you already know that a good portion is about who you know, so if you really want to work on getting booked, start making connections.

I think this is a factor too but I think it also has a lot to do with the kind of energy you put into the entire thing...and of course communication plays a huge role, you can't expect to sit home in front of the computer all day and expect to get booked...
I've witnessed this first hand here in my home town, because I don't like the style of trance that's played here I stopped going to trance parties and at the same time stopped getting booked...you have to be around, in constant contact with promoters, organizers and other artists. It would be too idealistic to expect to just get booked on the music quality itself
anyway I think everything is a factor nowadays, a lot of good points made in this topic

I got tons of connections (artists etc.) from my almost 16 years in this scene....dont help a squat these days... Just ask Colin OOOD too. They got tons of connections too... I dont see them on many Festivals or lineups even though they deserve it.
And it's a bit hard to get to know people (organizers) abroad if you dont get the bookings unless you are willing to travel from Festival to festival with your hat in your hand begging the organizers to spend 5 minutes with you
Point is unless you make the right style of music, is on the right label and know the right people chances are you wont get even one gig.

@Beat Agency ...I suppose you're right in that regard...certainly felt that way for me when I started playing 128 bpm stuff, was impossible to get a gig here regardless of how good my connections were...so I just went searching for greener pastures..worked out pretty good for me so far

Kris, seems like you're just whining about not getting any gigs.
1 gig in 2 years? Maybe the fault is not the organizers, it's you?
Even the crappiest artists get more than 1 gig in 2 years.
Heck, even myself with only 4-5 tracks released as Subra played more than 10 in the past 2 years and I wasn't even trying too hard (being a student). I guess if I was actively looking for gigs this could have been well over 30 or 40.
Again, no offense and not trying to start a flame war, but it just looks than whenever there is a thread about this kind of stuff you show up and start crying that no one gives a shit about you.
