I limited the shit out of this song I just made just to see how it would sound. It's the block of sound method I guess by Philip Glass, if that's a better way to explain it.

There's a quiet part in the end where the choir vocal samples play by themselves. This part sounds cracky. I believe it's because that this is because of the basic nature of limiting.

But, does this mean I should just not limit this section of the song? Or is it that I just need to modify limiter settings? Anyone else experience this?           www.musicproductionnatural.com || www.facebook.com/djamoeba | facebook page

I would automate the thresold of limiter, not limiting may be harmful for rms i think, the unlimited parts will sound too much below the rest

ps i'm wondering what's that Philip Glass method

hmm. when you limiting full track @master channel You need a small threshold so when comes quiet parts only with pads then You dont need to limiting.

Compression brings the loud tones down, in order to bring the quiet tones up you need to expand !

It can do both. I guess it depends on settings and compressor unit.

Don't know what material you have been given...
Think of it like that, compressing something means you squish it, so the highest peaks go down, expanding is just the opposite effect, you pull the quiet tones up.

ah i dont know man...i learned it a bit different...lets say you choose a sample of recorded rain..ok?

there r the loud drops infront of the mic and the quiet drops far away from it...as soon as i choose a copressor, the quiet ones get loud , so less dynamic....but the loud ones still stand the same...

no need to raise the volume again....

imho..           -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-

Take a wave form, compress it, meaning you squish it together, everything that is lout gets squished down, or you expand the wave form, meaning you pull it apart on a horizontal (dynamic) level and you bring what is depicted as less loud up. Thus the terms compression (squishing together) and expansion (pulling apart) from it's center...
what you talk about with the raindrops happens because you overall compensate for the coherent loss in amplitude of the loud freqencies when compressing by raising the volume.

@ aciduss Yes, a compressor can expand and compress, that is if the ratio is more than 1:1 you compress, when it is less than 1:1 it expands.          Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

welll ok....i agree...after thinking about...if you apply a compressor you always need to raise up the gain or got an autogain...so it squishes together like you described...

man!! i should lunch my teacher for deadvising me on that thing...

f...he is afraid of competition iguess...like most of the SAE teachers r actualy...around here..

thanks for that...

cheers
