it depends the source but it s possible to reduce the peaks to rms ratio wihtout using a "brickwall limiter" and making the sound more pleasant at same time but tbh i find it not convincing with plugins but it still work, saturators and other tape emulations should do the trick |

Why to use limiter on the track master ? Why dont just mix all right ? . Think about ..

The idea is to mix everything right, then put a limiter on the master.
Peace.

This ia an bad idea , You dont need an limiter at work , If you use limiter somthing is wrong with your production , For me its unnecessary option . |

Its not a bad idea if you want a good enough RMS level in order to play your tunes out.
Mixing into a limiter from start is a bad idea. getting your mix levels as close as you can to "perfect" and then strapping a limiter/mastering chain on, is not a bad idea.

Then thought about stem mastering, but I thought that I would do a better job if the number of stems, was equal to the number of channels in my tunes.

that kind of defeats the purpose of stems doesnt it? unless you were kind of joking which i think you were ;-)
people get so twitchy about this subject. i think its ok to experiment, thats the only way you learn. if it doesnt sound good, people WILL tell you. just as everyone says, do it after your mix/track is 80-90% complete. do constant A/Bs with it on and off, and pay attention that its not just getting louder. you can use your speaker volume for that. and remember less is more.
i master through stems which I then put into a liveset, and then very light compression on the master to keep it together, and i think i get a pretty good sound. but i always make sure that the limiters are not getting hit too hard (i would use that effect on individual tracks)
that being said i rarely use multibands, although i know how they work and they seem useful, my ears are not tuned to the differences and havent found how to use well. if anyone has any good advice on mutliband limiting /compression in mastering or a vid, lemme know
with ITB production, now the lines are blurred between artist, mixer, and mastering engineer. so i think its good to get a handle on each. just dont try making money from it unless you have a solid setup

I am experimenting with multiband compressors these days as I am compiling for a live set, and like you The Daleks my ears are also not tuned very well to the differences, so yes, it seems difficult to me too, however, I believe a big part of good mastering comes from using a multiband compressor correctly, not that it is easy...
Yes please advise on the use of multiband compressors in mastering jobs.
