Leveling an audio track

I have and audio track where I've recorded a modulated synth line. The recorded level goes really up and down as the sound is modulated.
I'd like to set everything to a an average level so that it doesn't go crazy in the mix, i.e. if the level goes up too much turn it down, if it goes too low, well, turn it up.

I've tried "riding the faders" a few times but it's really more difficult than it sounds. I could use compression but the sound will be altered I think.

Is there any audio editor that allows you to do this (by the way I use both Cubase & Live)?

volume automation is what i meant by "riding the faders". It's not as easy as it sounds and it takes forever to do (I have a 30 second clip to treat). This is a common issue I guess.

What synth did you record it from? Maybe the synth has an inbuilt compressor you could use, you could also try an expander...           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

never have problem like that, it make me think something wrong with the source ,maybe with the filters? or volume modulation, i would try to fix it on the synth to avoid using lot of compression.

Yeah try to see why it changes that much in the synth. Maybe there is an lfo on the volume for example. Or just try to adjust the modulation so it doesnt have such dramatic changes in volume.

Otherwise maybe try a combination of volume automation and a compressor?           soundcloud.com/supergroover

Hello,
So the sequence comes from Vanguard and the volume variation comes from a heavy BP filter modulation. It's a wav file in a remix pack from Lunarave so I wasn't able to modify it at first. In the end, I've recreated the sequence and found the exact patch that was used, a bit overkill but at least the sound is really clean now.
If you want to satisfy your curiosity, get the remix pack here : http://hadra.net/label_remixcontest.php +choose lunarave - unplugged mind. I'll post the track in a few days.

the name of the file is "lead intro.wav".
