Levelation

Halluluja !

I'd like to share a revelation that i had:

My first levelation: If you are struggling to get the levels of the individual instruments right, try to adjust the levels in mono on one speaker, because the sound-streams that are coming from both monitors can interfere with eachother. If you set the levels and also panning in mono and get the instruments to sit together nicely they will sound WAY better in stereo.

My second levelation: If you want to set the level of the kick and the bass in your mix, try to do it at a really loud level. Lo and behold the Fletcher-Munson curve:

http://www.webervst.com/fm.htm

-> Because most dance music is played loud on large soundsystems your bass will sound too loud on those if you monitored at a low level while mixing (because the lower frequencies sound softer then the low- and high-mid frequencies at lower sound levels). So when you're making final adjustments to your kick/bass and other levels of a nearly finished mix: try to listen to it LOUD AND PROUD! And try do some mono-checks.

I hope this helps you as much as it helped me.

in order to get this right.
you are converting all instruments into mono, make your mix with one speaker muted and replace them afterwards with the original stereo tracks?
but how can you get the influences from the stereo panorame on the level?

Psylopath: i leave the mix as it is, but i pan both (left/right) channels of the master fader to one side (left or right) on one speaker, effectively combining them. In Cubase SX you can do this by right clicking on the panner above the fader and dragging one channel to the other side (you get several options, but you'll figure it out ).

good luck

yo daan ! ,

well bro , i did give your technique a try and here is what i noticed ...

after making the master channel into a MONO channel and getting the entire mix on either the left / right monitor ... [ left in my case] .....i pushed all the faders down and started re levellling .......

after i completed the llevelling of a section of my song ... i once again converted the Master channel to stereo to have a file and was kinda surprised with the results ....

1. all the tracks that are MONO , sounded perfect after the levelling on the Master Stereo channel ...

2. all the tracks that were STEREO , sounded way toooooooooo loud after the levelling on the Master Stereo Channel ...

so , in short the levelling was actually screwed and i had to re adjust all the STEREO tracks once again on the MASTER STEREO Channel ..

so , effectively , what i did was then , converted all the STEREO tracks to mono , did the levelling once again and then when i heard the entire thing in STEREO [ of course after converting all the mono signals back to stereo ] , what a fuckin marvellous mix !!!

so , thats the bottomline in short !

respect ... chandan !

Hi Chandan, i don't know about the stereo-tracks sounding too loud with this method. I've never experienced anything like that. Nice to see you found a solution and posted it.

can this be achieved just by placing DFX monomaker in the master?           roll a joint or STFU :)

hi,
what i dont understand in your method,
is, once youve converted your stereo audio file to mono, and adjust the level through
the master channel panned to one side,
do i pan the indevidual channel to the side of the speaker or do i leave it panned as i want it in the mix?

Orik -> I usually fiddle around a bit with the panners of the mixer tracks as well but i keep them around their original position, because sometimes you just need to nudge a track a little to the left or right to make them fit in in mono. This is probably due to phase problems.

I don't really convert the file itself to mono, i just set both left and right of master fader on one speaker to do some checks and to get the levels right.

After setting the panning and the levels of the individual channels, i set both left and right channels of the master fader to their original positions and i listen to the mix if everything worked out allright.
