right then, some people used to use that single good ol' square wave with them odd harmonics.
Its got that "hollow" sound that creates that "hole" to fit other stuff in the mix, shit loads of sub, it sounds like techno! and them odd harmonics create them "strange" resonances that are in tune, like some weird 7th(?) chord hiding somewhere in there, but you can't put your finger on it.
Here's a rough mix of a new tune in progress that I am talking about.
I am going to use them more from now on...it makes me make new kicks that move away from the cliches of the kicks that are more common in saw basslines and are abundant in the scene.

here's the same sequence with a saw version, same modulation amount (prob need higher index) to demonstrate the difference of just switching the waveform. channel peaks at the same level as the square version.

bare in mind that I did use a touch of width modulation, something like 5% looking at it with the eye, so its not a clean 50-50 pulse width.

What do you fellow producers think?
the kick you are using sounds way too clicky imo. i think square wave basslines can work really well tho, one of my favs:

You are absolutely right, dipped few dB in the 2.5kHz region and eased up on the compressor that was working hard on the kick right after the transient, which had that dominant mid/high mid band and sounds much better now.
Nothing like a fresh pair of ears when you've been playing your own tunes, 6 hours a day.
Nice one mate, cheers!
The kick on that Krome Angels tune sounds massive! They are head and shoulders above the rest production wise, although the music is a bit shabby quite often in the tunes. They have these great driving segments, but then there is some sort of anthemic lead going on that ruins it for me.
Krome Angels are my A/Bing tracks though.

Its THE sh-101 saw + sub square VCO bassline. A long favourite and all time classic sound.

I hear what you are saying, but ask your self (like I asked me), would you think the same if you hadn't gone through the radio bombardment of electro hits that use a square wave bassline (like trance hits use saw) and have been played to death in every single dance club for the last...decade?
I too feel I have been conditioned to what I listen, if its long enough and constant enough.
People have used square wave basslines long before the electro era, no one said MWNN's old tunes, or Simon's "LSD", that used a square wave bassline, sounded clubby...at least I never thought they did.
But I can see where you are coming from, it has crossed my mind as well but its mainly down to the fact that so many electro hits have used it, it kinda points out straight to that style, only because its played to death on MTV.

yes it s exaclty that but maybe the bass need a more dirty sound to get ride off that cluby vibe, right now i have the feeling you re gonna mix 2 different worlds with the bass and the rest of the track, but it s just taste and for me it dont work great cause of that, i would try to get the squarish sound by distorting a other wafeforme but not sure it would work at all

I agree with mr. hooligan - we are having deal with famous cliché here. It's okay to use acoustic guitar or bells billion of times. Why not take square? And there is gonna be more fun to take square bass and make forest track with it www.overdreamstudio.com
