Start with the main melody, the hook. Build everything else around this, starting with the kick will set false limits on your timing and melody's.

Not to mention, if you have an untreated room, trying to mix a kick & bass to sound "good" before you have anything else is almost impossible because you have no other sounds to balance it with.

The last time I tried to mix k&b first, I ended up like this guy:

Kick & bass must fit to track. So when you add in the rest of the sounds, you have to change it again... so what's the point?

It is much easier to make a kick & bass that sound good after you have most of the track done, so now I make the k&b last

^ All of the above IMHO, of course

once it's the KB another time it's an atmosphere or just few notes.

i often spend too much time when i start with KB because i don't know exactly what i want until i bring other sounds.

Its better to begin with a nice idea about what track do you want to make...then we open the daw and start to programming the sounds included the kick and bass.
With this process we do also a simple mix just to fit all the parts nice and when we finish we look more carefully for the details.           ...into the wild....

i usualy start a track as painting a scatch ... using some template i made for cubase or even sometimes i take the last track i did and delete all the elements except for drums and kickbass.. when im in the mood of creating a new track i dont wanna be stuck making the kick and bass fitt or tuning the drums .. this can ruine the creativity (depending in which mood youre in ) so its nice if you have a ready to go template and you can start beeing creative and write your melodies .. later on in the progress the scatch becomes more and more a painting and i replace the standart drums with choosen ones for this track ..

a funny way to come up with very nice fx is to take some of your leads , drums vocals, etc and rout them trough the turnado ... even when all is just set to random you can create some very interesting stuff ... i then record the output of the turnado, cut the pieces i like and layer them with the original ..

the more rutine you will have the less you will get stuck and eventualy you will be able to make a track which used to take you weeks or month in just a few days or weeks .

Last track I did, I was just creating new patches for a Virus C I recently got.

So I just put a kick there to make a bassline, recorded that bassline, then I decided to make some lead sounds and try its arp patterns, recorded them, then I wanted to make some pad sounds so I recorded the intro, then wanted to make some wild LFO>Wavetable pitch modulation, recorded them, then threw a Moog Phatty arp and some FX through the MF-102, one Nord Lead FM lead and a couple of envelope>FM mod drones and an acid line with the x0xb0x...recorded them..added some scientist talk about multiverses (courtesy of samples sent to me by Mauri) and ended up with this track http://forum.isratrance.com/martian-arts-multiverses/

There was no workflow really, just got a new synth and put it through its paces, assembled the parts and in 4 afternoon sessions of about 4 hours each, I had a track ready. I love it when stuff like this happens

There is soo many VST's, Tutorial's, Book's, Video's and stuff... it's overwhelming at times, lol.

I test a new VST and then i start listening to each preset and then i find something which sounds cool, then i temper around and after a while i think i move on and then again "Oh this sounds sweet!" and then i read a tip on effect's in a magazine and try this and somehow this all goes into the track.

Yesterday i installed Studio One v2 and so far looks promising... i guess i have to stuck with something and finish a track with what i know before i ingest more data But i love it!

And next month i hopefully get my first Synth! OMG! ROFL

+1 for this as well as Faxi.

I usuallt go by creating a luch simple intro
adding a buildup for the bass drop.

then i create the finishing smashing climax. from there i build my story in between. Work as hard as i can to get it "right", and then i end with the intro!

ending with the intro is especially amazing when you can layer it with KB and gradually subtract percussive instrumemts.            http://soundcloud.com/li-fe

I said I like it dirty, not muddy.
