I mean using 2 serial ata disks as a raid and how does it affect performance in terms of music making programs. What parts of performance does it speed up/what are the disadvantages ... that kind of stuff.
Anyone who uses that type of a setup or anyone with links on it please drop a line.

I, on the other hand, do have a problem with SATA - but I think it's my motherboard.

If I record a wav file on a SATA drive, some clicks will be recorded with it. Don't ask me how many things I had to check in order to find it out.

IDE recordings are 100% fine.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

There are different types of raid. I assume you are talking about raid-1, also nown as striping. The idea is, the data is divided amongst 2 or more drives, so that a 100 MB file is written 50 MB to drive 1 and 50 MB to drive 2. So in theory, it takes half the time.

I can tell you that it doesn't work that good. Usually about 10 - 30% increase in write speeds. The big pitfall- one drive goes down & you lose everything, unless you are also using mirroring (raid-0).

Working in IT, I advise large companies against using striping unless they include mirroring, & now we're taling 3 drives minimum. Trust me, it's really not worth it. However, using mirroring alone (drive 2 is an exact copy of drive 1) is helpful, and I do recommend it as a "transparent" backup system.

I'm currently using 2 SATA drives for music, plus 1 IDE, and the SATA drives are faster. However, IF you do run into problems, troubleshooting sometimes is a little harder.

hmmm i think if ur board/hardisk works on ide then u never realy use the full power of s.ata even if ide is slave... that works the best when all system tuned with one another then u realy get the full speed           www.sattelbattle.com

the only realworld benefit to me with s-ata is that you don´t have to worry about master/slave settings and that the cables take up less space inside the computer.
at present the theoretical max transfer for a s-ata disk is 150Mb/s afaik, this however is only the max speed for the interface not the actual disk. at the max i think we´re looking at about 50megs sustained and that is both s-ata and ide (with a few high cost exeptions). running a raid system also seems to me to be redundant really cuz with my single ide drive i can run at least 70 stereo tracks at once so unless your demands for audiotracks are higher than this why even try to increase bandwidth here??? also take the above mentioned info about raid into account it takes some setting up and is more difficult to get up and runnin. and if it crashes well then i hope
you have some serious backup solution on hand .           Mastering available here:

So Dharma Lab if i use RAID 0 and lets say i have 2 80 MB hard drives ,system's capacity is 80 and not 160 MB ? Then you're right there's no point really in doing it.
Moreover i wouldn't risk raid 1 and lose all data in case smthng goes wrong
Thnx for the help ppl            Peace, Love, Death metal
