Lenny Ibizarre & Maelestrom

3. Out To Lunch (Lenny Ibizarre Version) – 128 bpm

Spring is back and brings forth blossom from the Iboga headquarters. This year sees the return to the fore of Mikael Dahlgaard, one of the founders and heads of the venerable Danish records label. As a producer, he is also known as Maelestrom and Phony Orphants, and has three artist albums under the belt, (including the now classic, splendid Symphony 2003 landmark opus) as well as a few prestigious and successful collabs with some of the hottest of his label’s artists such as an Ian Ion, Liquid Soul, Nyquist, Ticon/NDSA. Emok emancipated himself from rigid boundaries early on in his career, as he was one the first prog-trance artists to venture into the Electro-House register in his second Phony Orphants album. For this new release, Emok joins forces with Lenny Ibizarre, his compatriot and Ibiza-based producer, who is also a movie soundtrack composer and musician. Ibizarre made a name for himself as a pillar of the top-selling chillout Cafe del Mar compilations, and his artist profile has gained momentum thanks to support from a handful of the world´s most influential labels such as Ministry of Sound. If you haunt the chill out area of clubs or festival, you’ve certainly heard his hit rmx of The Doors’ classic “Riders on the storm”.

1/ The three track package kicks off with Emok’s interpretation of “Wasted youth” a rather techno-infused stomper, with a fat pumping bassline, and plenty of percussion flourishes quickly establishing an effective drive, while a smattering of the now classic driplets are sprinkled atop. The real highlight of the track hinges on the break sporting the minimal theme which gets plenty of transposes and delay, while another twisted and zooming theme lacerates and swipes across the stereo field. Nice start to the release. Suitable for all venues.

2/ Next up is another collab, markedly different from the first number. It is quite difficult to place it on the genre spectrum, even if the rocking bassline, backed by some solid percussion work and tom rolls, seems to descend from a progressive trance lineage. On top of this solid rhythmic combo, the twosome have built an intricate play of trippy stabs, squeakings, and metallic gurgles, all erratically twisted in a techy sort of way, while the rather indus metallic arpeggio makes up the theme, which then sways across the soundscape, propelling a nice build up. Let’s call that tribal techy prog, if you must pigeonhole it, but believe me, it rocks big time and should not remain unnoticed on the dancefloor.

3/ Last, we see Ibizarre himself taking the controls of “Out to lunch” to bring down the curtain on the package. It is a cool, techy, softly-echoing and pulsating piece, quickly establishing a deep groove that relies on shuffled hi hat, and light glitchy percussive theme, with plenty of airy pads. Those thriving on Smith & Selway classics will be at ease with this one.

Bottom line:
In summary, I was happily surprised and positively impressed with the quality of this release. These are nicely executed genre crossing pieces. Each should have their moment in the party, giving more credence to the observation that today’s forward thinking sound is techno-oriented. My favourites are number 2 & 3. Congrats to the duo! This assortment is a really nice teaser to the forthcoming Maelstrom album, “Lights on”.
