Some time ago i started to use a lot of legato leads in my tracks. I love legato i can say!
However, after some investigations i found some problems.
1) Different synths treat legato in different ways. All i can say by now that the best results I achieve with Rapture - it produces very soft, stable and beautiful transitions between notes. And the opposite UltraFocus - it has some fat sounds inside, but the legato is kind of buggy (or maybe i can't adjust it?) - the legato sequence becomes quieter and quieter while playing - looks like it looses velocity somewhere or i don't know. So, the first question: share your experience about what synths are good for legato leads?
2) The second problem is common for all synths. To make a legato lead, the notes in piano roll must overlap. If they don't, each note would have own sharp attack and you won't get any legato at all. This is very annoying if your lead is looped. In fact, you have to glue all parts of loop into one single item, to make all notes overlap. But! The very first note of the lead still has original attack, so you have to automate volume at the start of the lead, which is kind of annoying as well. So, any ideas about how to optimize the process of building legato melodies?
Have a nice day

1) set sustain to 100% and you're done.
2) set attack 150-200ms or longer
or
minimize decay to 0.
if you keep not having the results you desire you might want to adjust filter ADSR at same values too.

sorry to abuse the thread, but does anybody know if cronox 2 can play in legato mode?

i don't use Cronox, but suspect that if you activate "glide" and make notes overlap you will get legato.

you mean, if i do this, the melody will play legato even if notes don't overlap? will check, but doubt...

Some synths do allow glide even if notes arent overlapping. |

I have Blofeld and it has several approaches to the way legato works:
Quote:
| • Portamento means that a continuous glide is performed on all new notes.
• Fingered P means that a continuous glide is performed only when notes are played legato. Staccato played notes start on the exact pitch of their note.
• Glissando makes the normal Glissando effect in the same manner by changing the pitch in semitones.
• Fingered G is similar to Glissando but generates a pitch change only when notes are played legato. |

If you do as He said with decay, sustain etc. The sound will not loose velocity at any point. That's it.
in regards to the overlapping, I don't understand why you would want to avoid overlapping when you want the sounds to do Portamento/Legato anyway. I mean, how much of a problem is it really to glue together midiparts. Furthermore most sequencers doesn't require you to glue them together as long as the las note in a part is extented a bit into the next part. The note will play it's full length even though the midi part ends.
