I stopped because I felt I was wasting my time. Everybody I had started playing with became either professional musicians or music teachers. I did want to be a musician but I did not want to practice several hours a day which you have to do. Then I realized knowing how to play any number of instruments at a tacky degree is almost completely worthless, so I figured I could do other stuff instead. Such as travel around the world and such.

It depends on your perspective. if you are in it to make money and be pro and such then i agree, but if you are just having fun, expressing yourself, or a hobbyist (like me haha), then playing to a tacky degree is fine. if you are a producer and can play an instrument tackily, no problemo, learn a few licks or riffs, record a bunch of takes, find a good one, toss it in your electronic production and presto its cool and not worthless.           --

nice topic

sometimes when i am hard at work on a tune and it seems no matter how much i work on it, it doesn't move forward, then i can get into that mode you described "work" and there is no fun in it.

in these cases i try to step back from myself, take a minute to remind myself to relax, do it because i love it not because i need to and to have fun and let the track make itself and whatever comes comes.

That is only appliable to some people, and particularly if you are somewhat involved with making your living through music production. When you are playing percussions you cannot be tacky, you have to practice several hours a day to keep up, and you cannot really go to Thailand for a month. Ever.

When you pass a certain threshold in skills, and you become better then the average, you realize that going back to the average is like driving a tractor to the supermarket when you have been driving a BMW, or being homeless in a cold climate when you have lived in a mansion. Not fun, man. The time you spend PRACTICING to keep up you can use to learn other stuff, just like you don't want a high upkeep of rent or maintenance on your house or gear when you don't have a steady income.

You're thinking about it too much. Don't worry about what you'll do when you are 50, just make more music music now and everything will fall into place.

You might still be doing psytrance (of some form of it), or some other sort of sequence based electronic music... you might just be playing the guitar, drums, sax whatever. Just make sure you follow your heart and do what you like without putting stress on your self on what it is you currently think should be doing.

Peace out.

hey bro !! that's normal bro, but if you start to fear of loosing then you already lost ! So yeah find also a hobby what you like and you can mix your producing and your hobby together , you don't have to be in the psytrance sene , but craving for more experimental styles , so stay positive ! and find your way !! and yeah again don't think to much , its bad for your brain and it kills creativity !!!! namaste !

Some famous musicians had no recognition in their life. The question is are you dedicated enough to do what you believe in as much as they were. I can do everything else but there is only this one thing i am doing and i prolly will never quit doing it even if i have no release in my lifetime. I have this with me all the time when i work my day job i think of music. Find that thing that you always can enjoy if its not music maybe its not music what you wanted for yourself in the first place as a soul in this world.           http://soundcloud.com/magimix-1/chilling-forest-whispers
