Having immersed myself in production over the last year, while I know it is only the beginning of this journey,I truly feel as if I have found something defining and significant in this 'hobby' for lack of a better word.

I cannot however shake this nagging feeling, and I have managed to isolate what this feeling stems from. I believe that one day I will grow tired of production and will move on.

Because this has become so dear to me this thought fills me with dread, and on some days when I might not produce as much I feel as if it is the beginning of end, I force myself to open Ableton and it feels a bit like work, which I dont think it should? but then the next day I am immersed in it and loving it again.

I understand that this is just the natural ebb and flow of how things work, but I don't want to lose this great and wonderful thing.

I am curious if any of you guys ever get these feelings, and if you think you will continue to produce up to Raja Rams age (what a legend!) and beyond, or if you think you might end up cutting your hair, join the real world and work in a bank someday?

I know what you feel I used to feel like that sometimes too....specialy on days when everything you begin to produce sounds like shit or you think you have an awesome track and then you compare it to the greats and it can be very frustrating.....also in the beggining is hard because I didnt use to know shit....I would think man maybe im not good enough for this and maybe i never will...I should just quit....but then I got really sad because music is everything to me and there is music everywhere and it would be a constant reminder that I turned my back on my first true love..... so i couldnt quit and i knew quitting was not an option..because I hope to one day make a living out of this....I want to one day wake up and just make tracks all day and then do other fun stuff.....instead of having to go to work and then after work not having time for anything else but music..... and for me is like music is my only ticket out of this life and that is how I view it.... and thats what makes me not quit....because I know someday it will happen....you just have to keep at it and not give and find that motivation that will keep you there forever.... I recently got my first track signed after almost 5 years of hard work... but even now I know that there is still such a long way to go....but this proves that all my efforts are not in vain and that i really can make it....... everyone has ups and downs but if you really love music why think that you will give it up one day.... if its what you truly love then it will make you more miserable if you turn your back on it....dont despair just keep your goals clear what is it that you plan to accomplish with music and just stick at it man..... good luck and good vibes.... im out

interesting subject.

yes i know that feeling. i thought about that too. not only in terms of producing, also on several other hobbys i once had and invested a lot of work in.

for example. a year ago I invested many hours every day on getting good at real money online poker. including professionell coaching. and i already know of myself, that i start losing all interest as soon as im getting pretty decent at something. so eventually i reached that point in poker and from one day to the other it was over. i had no interest and motivation at all to continue. and its still like that 1 year later. i felt bad about it a few days but only because of my conscience. a few days later i discovered a new intersting hobby and it was great and i enjoyed doing it and was happy that i found it.

so what im trying to say is that the fear you have is probably because you only think about "oh i will loose something". but maybe u will loose interest because u find something that makes you even more happy. but u simply cant imagine that right now. i think its a natural thing.

Thanks for the reply D7uan. You have given me something to think about. I think what I gather from reading your post is that it would be difficult to abandon something you truly care about, and that love you have will keep you strongly bound to it.

So I should stop worrying about the 'one days' or 'what ifs' because if you truly care about something, (like you clearly do) then you would not forget about it and would keep at it no matter what. And if that day did come where you stopped doing something, then you really didn't care for it as much as you thought in the first place, and it would be time to move on..

Thanks for the insight Killik, you are exactly correct, the reason why I think I might lose interest is because, like you all of all my past interests have faded away... guns... land rovers.. an obsession with all things Japanese when I was a kid? (WTF!) so I don't want this to go the same way!

But I think you are correct, it is the natural order of things, and we learn and grow from the things we have an interest in, and then move on

sometimes i have that feeling too, i wonder what i will do when i m 50 .. but production is a very vague term.. making music is just a small part of what you can enjoy as a producer, sound engeinner.. if you get tired of making tunes, you may start to love making some sound design for games, or commercial or what ever... if you re hooked into production there is many way to jump from doing one things to a other..

Hey man, I know the feeling. All I can say is, no worries.

There are no worries here because this is just life. Life is just waking up and doing shit. That's it. You can't do it wrong. If you're breathing and growing and evolving, and you're finding peace within yourself, keep going.

Some days it feels like shit never changes and we're stuck in a loop. Take it one step at a time. If you sit around thinking "How am I ever going to become a famous rockstar?" or whatever, well that's a lot to worry about. Instead, think about what the next step is. One step at a time. Nobody built anything amazing all at once.

Patience and faith are key to following anything through I think and music is no different. And music will never turn it's back on you so there's no pressure to make the right moves.

I was going to leave you with this quote by Henry Ford, but I had to look it up and in doing so I found a few really good ones that he said. Smart man, regardless of his ethics, he was wise.

“Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs”

“When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it...”

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.”

All by Henry Ford, but that first one, about nothing being particularly hard, man that quote keeps me going some days. Some goals seem to tower over you and can become so daunting sometimes. Sometimes it's easier just to look at the first brick and just keep laying one at a time.

And if that day comes where creating music is no longer relevant to your life, well, nobody is forcing you to stop so when you do stop it should be because you feel no need to continue. And if that day comes, don't fear being sad, instead be happy and amazed at all the beautiful times you spent making musical love with yourself and those around you. It's beautiful all the way around.

Good luck.

PoM makes a great point about production being a vague term. If you are in love with music then no moment spent working with her is lost.

With regard to forcing yourself to open ableton, i would recommend against that man. You cannot force the creative process, ever. Furthermore, if this is just a hobby for you, then it should be done for fun or relaxation, so keep it that way. If you dont feel like producing one day, thats fine, you have your whole life to work towards a goal.

I could never leave. This thing has me.

I have invested so much in many ways that I would't quit this emusic thing, not even in my late days.

I expect to keep tweaking knobs for a long time as this pleases me like no other activity. Not only music but the way computers and synths can make it and the psychedelic part of it also something I love.

Some of this is truly hard work. I do like to force my self. Because, as it has been said here before: one part of this thing is the creative music writing thing and the other is a bunch of boring studio work... like managing projects, bouncing, presets, recording, editing and basically listening for the same track for weeks or months trying to find what it lacks and how to make it shine... that is not something that just happen that is nothing but hard work. (And you can take away the "boring" part if you are in the right mood, you know the engineering hat).

So even if you are not feeling very creative, then just do the hard work. Or just leave the fcking studio dude I know a bunch of pro producers that admit not touching the DAW for weeks because no muse is to be found.

If you love this thing it will remain in your life.
My mind and my life is surrounded by this music, music making and audiovisual production in general. My creative activities are what I love the most about life... I could never let go drawing, writing or music is the only way to let my demons out without harming anyone

We all get the 'i wanna quit' feeling sometimes... but the best advice I've ever got for this and other life situations: DON'T GIVE UP.

Most of the time, to become good at something takes time and effort.

I started playing music when I was a kid, I never thought I would quit playing and I never thought I would take a ten year break when I did not even touch a music instrument. However, during that period I did other things.

Musicians are often hung up on how much time they spend or do not spend on various things. Fact of the matter is, if you are a musician you have to practice every day, because if you do not, the paying audience will notice.

Percussions used to be my main instrument, and if I skipped practice for one day, other musicians would immediately notice it. If I skipped practice for two days, the audience would notice, and if I skipped for three days even the most unmusical audience would notice.

Hello fellow percussionist!
That was a fun detail to notice about audience
Rhythm is just that kind of thing, u can't say when it's not moving you, if it's going right or no, u can just feel it.

Anyway, i'm a little curious, why did you stop playing?

I've been practising myself like a year or so (1 hour a day minus weekends )
Too much actually because i'm little worried about my hands :/
And i've played 5 years already live djembe
