Hey everybody
I am a webmaster from Switzerland, and during the last months I saved some money so I could stay somewhere in a warm country during the winter months (november 2011 until march 2012).
Playing the piano and other instruments (flute, ukulele) since my early childhood days already and working with computers for about ten years now, I began to become more and more eager to learn how to produce electronic music myself in the last years. Sadly I didn't really find the time and motivation yet.
So now a new idea popped into my mind: how about learning how to produce electronic music somewhere abroad? E.g. go to Israel (or some other country) and visit some sort of a school that teaches this?
So my question is: do there exist offers like this? I am really open to ideas and suggestions, it theoretically could be in any country, and in any software (but Mac, please!), so please give me some hints where to investigate this plan further!
So it would be great if there existed a course that introduced into the basics of music production quite fast (a good mixture of theory and hands-on-action), so after a half a year I would be prepared well to dive into producing electronic music...!
Thanks again for any hints about this topic!
Best wishes,
Josh |

Well, so far I stumbled upon the following:
Dubspot in NY, http://www.dubspot.com/
BPM School in Tel Aviv, http://http://www.bpm-music.com/
Sadly BPM doesn't offer an english website...
I guess I have to be a bit more specific: I don't want to become a highly professional trained music engineer, I'm just interested in producing music for my own fun, so no 4-year-apprenticeship or something like that, please, but only something where I can get my hands dirty in a quite short time...
Thanks for help! |

Hey guys
Thanks for your hints!
@Alekzis: this looks interesting! Sadly I don't really find something like a schedule on upcoming classes etc., the english link only goes to http://www.facebook.com/sfsibiza where there isn't too much information... They talk about different courses from half a day up to one month, but I can't find any specific details about them.
@elastic_plastic: as pointed out, I don't want to spend years visiting such a course, so doing a Bachelor or Master is absolutely out of question. I'm looking for something to dive in quickly and get my hands dirty, so I have a good basic knowledge and can begin to explore the stuff by myself... |

Why don't you stuff you laptop with tutorials, bring some books on the topic, good headphones and just focus on producing music all day long why you rent a room somewhere with a view on the beach. Mexico would be good
Or find some people that are already good in producing electronic music and get a lesson from them every few days for a few hours.

@supergroover: I learned many things the way you explain it, but now I'd like to do it in a different, more professional way. I have 6 months with which I can do whatever I like, and my plan is to get out of them as much as possible! ;-) |

i went once to sae for what was called electronic music production course. it was expensive and in some kind of professional building. but looking back it did not make sense for the money it costed and time it took.
learning in a more professional way? one on one tutoring i also got from an experienced psy producer. this helped the best. and you dont need to wait six months before you can dive into electronic music production. do it right now. start here with reading. open your sequencer and go.

Find a country you like. Email a producer you like from that country. And ask him to teach you a few hours a week and work on your productions for 40 hours a week. I would not spend my money on SAE courses and other schools.

"Check this out:

that's the school of etnica guys apparently, should then be quite fitting dance-psy music learning needs
Our goal is to teach students how to explore the world of sound and transform their passion for music and audio into a dream career. All teachers are well-known producers who perform many times at major, prestigious, global festivals and parties around the world. Names like Max Lanfranconi, Simon Posford, Maurizio Begotti, Riktam & Bansi (GMS), Merv Pepler (Eat Static), Davina Elmosnino, Stephan (Bamboo Forest),), or Dimitri Nakov among other production masters.

Soundfarm Studios Ibiza seem rather expensive to me, around 4000 euro for one month of intensive training (3 hours a day, 5 days a week), although the offer sounds interesting.
@OOOD: Could you explain "your way" a little deeper? What program do you use, e.g.? |

I've been a Cubase user since 1990 so that is my main tool, although I can teach Ableton Live and Reason too. 'My way' refers not to the software, but the production techniques I use, which can be used in any music software you like. I believe most of the work of learning music production is in training ones ears and learning to listen analytically, and I aim to give people who come to me a solid grounding in these skills (usually with reference to their own productions) as well as the tools necessary to put those skills in action when making music. DAW-specific techniques are obviously also included. Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering
