Hey guys,

I'm trying to do some psytrance leads (like Ital, Burn in Noise...) to my tracks but it sounds a bit cheesy.

I'm trying on Discovery and, sometimes, Albino 3.

Do you have some tip?

Thank you very much!!!           Sakyamuni> Groove Nightly Progressive Psychedelic Trance

Hello Sakyamuni ..

Ill give you here an big tip , Its will change your mind thought and at the time makes you better .. Never say 'Like this one or that one' Always say ' I want creat my own unique sounds' then you will see how things come to you , If you looking for others tunes you are taking your self and your own expectation down , So next time say and think that way and you will surprise how many good things will appear and come without you even want , Mean or thinking of .

Try get and use Gemini Vst , Nord , Ketron , Theres so many good vsts around and belive me man - The prob its not with the vsts , Its us , Its 90% our mood and our ability to take an small little things (Sounds) And makes them big , Deep and larg , This is not the vsts , Dont let this illusion control or 'manage' your head .

Take the time ... Thing will happen .. You will see .. All the best ..

IHMO:

I can give you another tip.

First learn to copycat other's sound then you will know how to create your own.

It is great to mimic your favorite artist's sounds.

As with most arts and forms of expression it is better to start out by reproducing what previous man have done in order to broaden your skills and knowledge, then, with time you can create anything you want.

Of course at the end you will chose what to do...
Post some examples and we can help you get there more easily.

BTW Not all sounds have to be new and original, there are some basic exercises that most psytrancers dominate before actually getting to the innovation stage.

I fing very very useful thing in avoidnig boring, chessy and static lead is to assign small amounts of different paramters to velocity. Than build a sequence you like and then just shuffle the velocity values. So youll get different phrases with the sam sequence/melody/rhythmic material. Then to build your lead even further, change the notes but leave velocity phrases intact.

so you can have

melody1
velocity pattern1

melody 1
velocity pattern2

melody 1
velocity pattern 3

melody 1
velocity pattern 4

melody 2
velocity pattern 3

melody 2
velocity pattern 1

melody 2
velocity pattern 2

melody 2
velocity pattern 2

...
..
.

this saved me from my boring and static leads, also play with rhythms in that same manner and youll see your stuff gets a looot less boring and dull.

best,

You want to make leads with synths, so you have to take in account a lot of techniques. You have to create the sound (tone and timbre) by manipulating the synths (or VSTi) and effects (the VST), and you have to manipulate the melody.

If you have a acoustic instrument you already have something that has it's own tone and timbre, and playability. In that case you will be trying to get a good set of notes and sounds from it, and do effect manipulations. But when playing with synths, you have to synthesize the original sound, creating tones and timbers.

That's where the hard part comes in. I say you should learn how a synth works and how you can tweak it to create the sound you want (if you want a bell, a whistle, a violin, a bass, an alien, or my favorite) a squeak). After gaining some sound engineering techniques, you should be able to hear a sound in your head and reproduce it with a VSTi. When you can achieve that, it will be a lot easier to create the music you want. Nevertheless, you will always learn more and more about synthesizing and sound manipulation.

So whenever someone says "try to make your unique sound" or "try to copy-cat other peoples sounds", the only want to help your synthesizing techniques. Many psy sound are clichê's, repeating themselves over tracks, and are recycled over space and time, so don't be afraid if your sound sounds like someone else's sound.

Note that I haven't spoke about melodies and playability.

My 2 cents on sound synthesis in psy trance is nothing is static, all the sounds have major and minor changes over time, so PRESS RECORD and tweak and tweak and tweak, automate, tweak again, LFO it to blithering, tweak it again and repeat. All that really matters is if you are having fun!           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

I agree, although one should also keep in mind that many of us (I for one) have a tendency to never think I achieve something good enough when reproducing like this.
I'll waste hours never 'getting it right' while what I do get may be just as good, only different. Without knowing which vst and plugin chain was used for the original, reproducing exactly right is quite difficult.

Thank you guys.

I'm really beginner, so some things are difficult to do alone in Logic 9.

I don't wanna reproduce y artists' tracks, but I need to know how great artists do some things.

Thank you all for the tips.

Hey Kotton,
Even without this knowledge, I'm trying something like this in my last track.

Hope to show something soon.
