Right, so I've been working on my leads and they're pretty good but they miss something when I compare with released tunes of the same style.
It's hard to describe but I'll give it a shot. It's as if they aren't fast and aggressive enough..when I open the filter cutoff I want the sound to not just come in, but to really rush in almost falling over on itself, super-aggressive.
I guess the problem isn't the patch creation because I can make the sounds that I want, they just don't seem fast enough. I've been messing around a lot with envelopes and filters which I believed would do the trick, and I can almost get it, but not quite.
I am not talking about gating or arpeggiating the sound to give it some action. I'm not talking about layering 2 leads either.
But I guess that's where it comes back to me...I'm not really sure what I'm talking about but I can hear it.. sort of the difference between a controlled lead and a totally insane one
Pretty much any Kindzadza tune has leads like this. Also Paranoize I noticed is good at it.
So..those of you who know their stuff, please tell me if I'm just talking s*** and should be tweaking those envelopes some more, or if there are any tricks that will help me unleash madness on the world
Boom shankar!

Try some slight Lfo on pitchbend for some madness, and filter and anything that can give you madness... often you can run a clean lead and then at times just mad it up with some slight lfo... also some FM madness... pulswidth modulation is also a cool thing..
another thing is giving a touch of a effect here and there, maybe just a dry lead that pops in and out of a flanger, or bit crusher....
just be innovative and dont just squash the sounds with FX, do it like a EFFECT.
so i leave you with your imagination,
and sure arp patterns is cool, but for agro leads best is to use halftone steps for a haunting feeling.. also if you go lower donw in freq the lead will be more agro, so always try stuff in different octaves, sometimes you notice that it sounds better somwhere else....

work in higher bpm ..
make lots of very tiny midi noted in between the longer ones.
using compressor in right setting , also makes sound to be "faster"
find in eq , might be that raising some hi freqs will apear to do so.
constant change in filter , eg cutoff , env amt , resonance...

also to add, its can be a nice thing to have a gang of different leads, which breaks the atmosphere and changes the feeling of the track, like one sweet beautiful lead and a agro lead that just kicks in and break the other one, in the same pattern but just a different sound... this can be very effectfull and take the track to a whole new level.....
also play with the notelength, this can make it rush, but it also works to automate the envelopes of the adsr....

Hey thanks for the replies, I guess sometimes I don't see the wood for all the trees.
Basically I was using Albino for my experimenting since I just love that synth and out of old habit I always had an arp pattern switched on because I figured it'd give the leads more attitude. In fact it was that which made them a bit stale. When I instead used halftone steps and tiny notes, playing with velocities etc I pretty much got the results I was looking for.
There was nothing wrong with the patches or my envelope/filter settings.
Like you say, variation can be percieved as speed too, something which is always same repeating tends to sound boring.
tsabeat: yeah tried compressing with 'suppressive' settings which sounded real nice.. didn't eq though, will try that too.
NES: pulsewidth modulation is cool but slightly unpredictable results.. |

Also I don't know if you've switched up to the new albino 3, even if you havn't, if you use the Saturation on the filters for your leads this will give your sound more bite. Especially if you add the filter in one of the fx spots, then turn up the saturation on that, you can use a notch filter if you don't want it to effect the sound much, or a completely open LP with no modulation. I found it's great for making lead sounds that just scream!
I know this isn't what you were asking directly, but it seems to give it some extra edge. |
