Hey guys i've fucked about all day trying to immitate this lead and still can't get it >_<

Tried messing with pitch and cutoff LFOs but it's nowhere close, if someone could upload a preset (albino3,sylenth,synth1) or tell me how to get this down it would be awesome

Lead starts @ 1:50ish and continues to get harsher. The wooshy, sawish distortion sound.

Peace <3

You need:

- To learn FM synthesis

Watch this carefully:
http://insidesynthesis.blogspot.com/2008/02/episode-four-fm-synthesis-part-1.html

Albino and Sylenth are very well capable of FM synthesis. Read the manual on Albino, on the synth1 it is pretty easy just turn the fm knob up, try different oscillator combos and maybe get the second osc (modulator) some octaves up / down to your taste...

Automate cutoff in rythmic fashion or modulate with lfo, some resonance and distortion on top can make it even nastier.

At 2:30 aprox another lead comes in, this one is less noisy with some portamento / glide and probably a pitch envelope with some attack to make it peeeeowww... i recently did a mimic of a similar lead for sylenth1 (which is not fm but sounds great), i can't find it but it must be some pages away... it was on a question about an A-Mush vs Alienn track if i remember correctly... in face a-mush himself posted there.

Find it and you have your preset... this typical nighty tracks are usually filled with the same sounds... mostly FM sounds with lots of pitch tricks, from gliding notes octaves apart to pitch envelopes / lfo and detuning...

Practice a lot... and understand synthesis.
That's key.

Hey man thanks so much for the help, i've gotten pretty close in ablino... but I was just wondering which FM knob you were talking about in Sylenth, i've never really seen an FM setting in Sylenth.

Thanks again!

Sorry, my bad I meant Synth1

Sylenth can produce some harsh sounds too but you have to explore the distortion units... FM in sylenth would be killer right?

Also Discovery, Predator and Dune are capable of good fm leads

And what about NI FM8? Does it worth money or not? Or it possible to create any FM based sounds with free Synth1?

you don't need to shell out for FM8. it's good, but you can create some fantastic sounds out of any FM synth.

what it comes down to is this: if you want to create THAT particular FM sound, you might well have to use an instrument with very similar capabilities/sounds/etc. but you can create a similar but unique FM lead very much like it - that serves the same role in the mix - with any FM capable synth.

i use Albino 3 for most of my FM stuff. And yeah, if Sylenth 1 had FM I probably wouldn't use any other synth for leads and basses.           Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. ~Kurt Vonnegut
