I try to think of how to manipulate the sound depending on it's stage in the chain. i.e

1. Oscillators can be tweaked for wave morphing, fading between oscilators, FM modulator pitch and amplitude and spread. This is the stage where you can really get thinks to wobble, squeak and clatter. Obviously LFO's can be assigned to all these parameters as can midi nobs.

2. Filters... filters, filters, filters. It's all about hand tweaks here for me. LFO's of course, but I like to fade between filters and fade between 2 oscilators going into each filter. It's good to get that sense of movement by tweaking cutoffs, but with the right sounds going in you can do some really nice fades which give very individual movements.
Also 1 nice full sound going through 2 band pass filters in paralell is a tweakers paradise.

Or if you ever get really creative just assign velocity to... everything

Wow, this is a great topic... I think I'm way too narrowminded (dunno if that's a word) when it comes to automation of the lead synth parameters.
It would be awsome if someone could post some samples and explain how the automated it....

Mostly I just automate cutoff, revb wet/dry, pitch bend... maybe that's why my leads sometimes get kinda borring..

Cutoff frequency and pitch are the most significant ones to automate, imo.

In terms of automating parameters, do you think you can overdo it? I mean if i automate a million parameters, the sound starts to lose its identity. How many and how much do you think is the right balance?

So do you guys tweak by hand? And do you record it as midi, and if so do you loop the automation, or do you make it so the automation is constantly changing and never the same for each bar?
