so im barely starting to get the hang of layering instruments and I was wondering about how many layers do you guys use per bass, leads, pads, fxs, percs and kick....i know this might vary from track to track but on average....the reason i ask this is because my leads always sound thin and i accidentaly added an extra layer to a lead and it sound so good...one extra layer on an otherwise dull 2 layer lead sounded way better and fuller.....so just on average how many layers?

totally depends what you are after, but i would say layering is not really needed for most bread and butter psy synth sounds.
might depends the genre too, perosnally ii would use more layering of synth in style like progs , you have more space for phat sounds but in full on i find it s not really needed...
layering of drums i can use few layers ... but i would rather use the right sample that dont need anyhting or not much if possible

I only use two layers for basslines for tunes that are not the straight 16th single saw bass patch.
One in mono doing the bottom end, and another layer on top if, stereo doing the mid/top layer.
The only thing I layer on a kick is a tight hat/ride sound, tuned to match the click of the kick.
For lead sounds I tend to layer stuff in pretty much every track, playing the same midi patch, but one lead might do a S&H resonant filter patch, one a more straight foward lead sound and some times a BPF lead doing extra stuff...some times I put each lead through the same delay to give a more uniform vibe, some times I use different delay times to make things more complex.
With Pads too, some times I might use a Gregorian chant layered with a basic PWM pad.
Anything goes really, but use too many layers, or even two thick layers and there goes your space in a mix. It all depends on what I want to achieve at that point.

As Martian arts say, usually only layer a ride/short hat with the clicking sound of the kickdrum.
A fat clap underneath your snaredrum is also a nifty trick to have in ones sleeve, compares what sound you want though! gonna make this fat "KHOH" sound.
But i prefer my snares go more like "KISH" or.. "KAAH". it's just better. k?
