Layers and Clarity...tricks?

Sorry if there's already a post about this, not sure what to search for.

Basically, I'm having trouble maintaining clarity with all the layers that I want to have..I understand that EQing helps with this a ton but, there has to be other ways too? I find I can only have so many sounds retain the qualities I want with EQing.. I feel like in this aspect, this is where I don't understand compression or something like that.

I was experimenting with sidechaining leads, and it seemed to help a bit, but I really didn't have any idea what I was doing.
Soo anyone have any tips/tricks/ideas regarding this?

eh eh?

Probably not the answer you're looking for, but...

If your layers are blending together too much, chances are the sounds themselves are too similar.

Just in the same way that the different parts of a song (Kick/Bass, Synths, Drums) generally occupy their own frequency ranges (low, mid, high), different types of synth sounds should occupy different spaces in their own range.

I can't say for sure that this is the problem since I haven't heard the track in question, but that's what I'm guessing... I used to have the same problem, and still do on occasion when I'm set on using a certain sound.

Instead of doing really complex stuff like sidechaining leads, try focusing more on choosing different sounds that will work next to each other. Compressing leads is often good, but you shouldn't necessarily need to be doing really complex compressing either.

He's telling the truth you know. If you can't fix it with panning and eq, it's probably a problem in the arrangement. Just as you don't put five basslines in your track, you can't use five leads or five padsounds that are playing the same pitch and have a transparent mix. No such thing.

A few things i have found useful.. (thanks to this site)

If for instance you are running a couple of bass lines try cutting out some low frequency... for instance i usually run a 303 and an (emulated) juno... i usuall cut out a bit of the low on the 303 so you are left with a cool cut off sound on top of a deep bass...
