is it a good idea to layer the bass with multiple instances of the same synth or even different synths? ive heard that it is not possible for one software synth to accuractely produce the bite and the sub of the bass when compared with analog synths.

If different filters are applied to each one is it still likely for phase cancellation problems to occur? i experimented by putting a lowpass on a deep sub patch at about 80hz and highpassed another crunchy saw bass at 80 and played them in unison and it sounded ok on my headphones but im not able to listen on anything else. i think that where the curves met there was a bit of emptiness so maybe setting both the filters at the same value is a bad idea?

if not, is it possible to route the high(er) end of the bass to one channel and the low end to another so different processing can be applied to each one? how?

i dont know how to use software to make bass, so i dont know what would happen, but on gear, i get all sorts of crazy bass lines by layering basses and using bandpasses and low passes and high passes and get some NUTS sound when there is some cancellation           G+ - Army Collective - Kontakt Recordings

There are varying opinions on this...

Very clean, rolling basses are often just with one oscillator - my personal preference is two, as it can become a very muddy mix if you have more various constantly triggering layers. I feel that you lose control of the sound when there are various cancellations which you don't necessarily understand (in the creation process)

Using layered sounds CAN be useful though... for example having a nice, precise mid bass sound with clean triggering above a more powerful sub.
However, this can also lead to a lot of nasty bass harmonics which inevitably can fuck up the mix...
Careful e.q.ing is needed when you do this...

A sawtooth and nice, subtle spectral wave I always find productive

to get more control independent of how many oscs you use and whatever else you do, consider to make the oscillators start from the same position all the time (e.g. don't leave them free running as this introduces some sort of 'randomness'. virus users know what i speak of )

all the best.

...yup.... and one of the quick and sure fire ways of doing this is to create a long sustained note with the synth/synths of choice....when completely happy with the sound... export to a .wav file, then load in to any sampler and trigger... this will ensure the attack of the note is constatnt and there are no 'Virus type Random elements' created by using a continuous Oscillation in the Bass...
