question and answer is not layerd melodies, in that sense, but sure you are right that they can be. cause they need to fit eachother. or do they? hehe
layerd melodies, well iv done some, and this is where the real magic is to be found
i would even say that rhythm sections can be layerd with the melody... if you think about it, everything sohould complement eachother..
also if we speak only rhythm, polyrhythms can be layerd, or rhythms can be layerd.
first trick is to find sounds that fit or complement eachother.. then you can do the melodies.
how to merge them, try the old trick, panning the melodies to each side, left - right, not hard, but enough for them to be heard.
and you can also merge them by one melody being in another waveform and the other being another waveform.
Also play in different octaves, this is important, let one melody be low and the other high...
of course there is a posibillity to merge melodies in the same octave if the timbres are very different from eachother... but most often i would think of it like this, you play a melody in the bass octave and you play a melody ontop of it in some other octave.
also different sounds can be put together to form one melody, instead of two or more melodies playing together.
ill leave with that everything is possible,
and seperation is keyword here,
seperation can be, high, low, left, right or anything that seperates.
listen to some tracks and hear how they have done!
i think with these layers you talk about, you create some nice and full music, everything is melted together in a nice way....

I often end up improvising when I've got a nice part tracked down. reduce the speed to say 100 bpm, hook your controller up and jam along... knowing some scales is always good but not imperative.
good idea is to eq so you leave the fundamental frequencies untouched and add a little boost on different frequencies for each of those parts. like filling up a box. stuff like individual panning and gating can open up space. quite nice is aswell a synced lfo on the filter or pitch (vanguard comes to mind)... seperates two melodies quite nicely apart
nice tool for adding depth and variation onto melodies is this plug called camelspace from camelaudio... not free unfortunately. hope that helps a bit.

l337 what tracks inspire you to start this topic...?
and what do you mean by layering melodies for making a complete one?

An effective trick is to copy a melody you've written and tweak a few notes here and there, maybe in a transposed octave. |

just a little trick I found some time ago to create infinite variations of a melody:
use the randomize feature of your sequencer
I don't know about the exact location in all hosts, but in energy xt it's very easy. create a catchy melodie, set up the randomize settings so it simply changes the orders of the notes except pitch. voila the perfect solution for the lazy people. obviously create a copy of the pattern first.
sure not every random pattern will sound good and is able to layer with another sequence, but there's a good chance.

you can try mix pads with percurssive sounds. this should help to make the melody more complex. try also to make a melodie line with 4/4 and mix it with one of difrent rythm like 3/3, and the result should be intresting. also when you make a melody think about the rythm it haves and see how is going with the rythm from the drums. they should melt toghether.
theres no rules make whatever sounds good hehe
