I have read in numerous places that it is good to check that your mix still sounds good in mono as some club systems are mono systems.

Is this true?

If so, then I think it would be probably not a bad idea to mix two versions of a track, one for stereo systems and one for mono systems where antiphase has been removed?           --

You have a nice example of this vibe tribe tune to check in mono and see what it does to the tune.

I think its not true that most systems are mono. I think only some maybe. From my experience. I even tend to expand the stereo when i'm on the mixer so it will sound even wider.

After all you have left and right speakers and stereo output from the cdjs, why to make it mono ?

chichke - i tried out this technique i've seen on andi vax tutvideo.
maybe i don't understand something but i stopped doing it sense i noticed it just kills the power of the track. I started to use it more musicaly. Some parts would be mono like the beat

and other parts need to open up with those wide stereo parts. Mostly pads and leads. Which contain tons of antiphase which is part of the sound and should be there for example phaser or flanger or just chorus or it could be even part of the additive synthesis of the waves. And there is no wrong using antiphase where it should be used. Basicaly if you hear the sound its good if you don't or it gets really wierd or weak or just gone its bad on your stereo mix. End point is antiphase can and mostly IS a part of your sound. If there is unwanted antiphase check your source and dont narrow it with a plug unless thats the way you want it musicaly.

I know what you are talking about. If you think it's realy ruin a sounds so fuck it. But sometimes it's helping the sound also.
Actually all this antiphase issue is very interesting. I would realy want to hear about it from a mastering engineer or a sound freak that know a lot about it.           http://www.youtube.com/user/ChichkeMultiTech

Two versions is not a bad idea . Probably labeled
blablabla - blablabla (club mix).

Make mix in mono, add stereo after as some said here is a way to go too.
Or just make good music that sounds good even if you reverse it and play it through an ass of an elephant.

Anyway in stuff like layering leads (which i never ever do unless i feel like clipping much) i would deffenetly go with the ears.           http://soundcloud.com/magimix-1/chilling-forest-whispers

i read a time ago, antiphase isnt worth to think about, since there nearly is no mono system anymore.

but it seems to be a trend to exploit expanders to the max...
also not good imo, because it can kill the sound too.

@ daark
you def. never heard the difference between a decent layered lead
and a single lead. its the key for big leads. it dont have to be obvious
that there are two or 3 leads, decent usage of a layered supersaw can
make the difference big time for example.
i dont know what clipping has to do with layering leads.

Sometimes it's needed and sometimes not. Depends on the sound and how many sounds there are at the background. Follow your ears...           http://www.youtube.com/user/ChichkeMultiTech
