for example, you can program your patches such that they complement one another by their sound characteristics (i.e. have most of their frequency content in different bands) or by making them complement one another by playing a melody together (not both the same melody but each of the sounds plays some of the notes, such that both parts together give the whole melody). or as another idea, make one sound play the 'question', and the other sound play the 'answer', in more classical terms.

with reverb you usually don't reach this goal but make your overall sound mix muddy and undefined if you use too much. (use reverb to give instruments a natural environment, such that they don't sound too dry (which in my opinion sometimes 'hurts' the ears.. ))

great tips dtd, i like the question and answer one. requires a skill to make certain kind of melodies, skill that i seem to lack

you can use the reverb and other effects to "glue" the sounds together so that you can't distinquish the different layers anymore but it still sounds fat. only a tiny amount of reverb might do just fine so that you can't tell that there is any reverb.

not true. reverb is great tool for stereo imaging. diferent types of reverb can also separate between parts. also the use of mono/stereo channels can make diferent.

good mix is crucial- eq & compressor makes difenerent
