Laptop Vs Desktop.

Four years ago I invested in a desktop powerhouse that has been my main hub for all that time. All my games, video editing work and music production has been done on this baby, but now it's time for an upgrade.

I just don't know whether I should go laptop or desktop, with quite a high budget.

I need something that will be able to handle gaming and audio for the next few years and I figure that for the gaming front a desktop really is the way to go.

Is a laptop pretty much the eqivalent to a desktop in terms of music production, or would I find it easier writing music on a desktop?

The major plus of a laptop is obviously mobility, but if I got one I reckon it'd be a desktop replacement and pretty damn big so I'm not even sure how often I'd take it out of my house other than for gigs.

In terms of live sets, I can really see myself just mixing my own tracks with CDJs. I've been DJing for about a year and reckon I can put on more of a live performance, remixing on the fly and pulling off other tricks, with CDJs and a mixer rather than a bounced file on Cubase.

What do you reckon? At the end of the day, if I ever started using Ableton and could perform a much liver set, would it be worth carrying a desktop tower and monitor to a party?

Considering the possibilities of doing upgrades whenever the need comes makes a desktop superior, and i always favored a real monitor instead of the tft on laptops.

Upgrades are also a definite priority. On the plus side a laptop would be cool to take out to jam with instead of a guitar slung over my shoulder.

I hate laptops )

They have so small screens, small HDD's, and theye are expensive. For the same money you can get a desktop-PC, twice more powerful, and with a big screen.           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

Well, if both systems have the same specifications, then they are equally powerfull. But the portable version will always be quite more expensive.

Computer technology is evolving quite fast, small components are getting better and cheaper, so its normal to think of upgrading. And it's very hard to really upgrade a portable, while desktops are made to be upgraded.

You could keep your computer and just upgrade some components, a new motherboard and processor, probably a faster hard drive for your system files, more and faster ram and your just about done.It ends up to be not very expensive.

But portables have the advantage of being portable
The thing is, portable computers aren't made to handle much labor. They weren't made to be used as a normal desktop, plugged in 24/7.

Since you mostly dj your music, a computer isn't really necessary. But you could still make it live(r) with some external hardware, a drummachine, a synth, a workstation, etc.

I say go for desktop upgrade. Like that you can buy specific and better components for a cheaper price, or buy a new piece of studio equipment           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

IMHO

Buy a laptop only if you really need transportability and be prepared to have bad performances and to spend a lot of money in case of problems (due the high cost of spare parts).           http://soundcloud.com/alphadelphi

maybe check specific models of laptops and desktops and find out if its true that laptops are much more expensive then desktops these days.

when i bought my desktop i never thought i would move my studio but now i am moving a lot.

so i bought a laptop and was surprised about the stability and enormous power of this 600 euro dualcore laptop. it works as good as my desktop.
i am sooo happy with it.

bad performance??? no way. its outperforming my 3 year old dualcore desktop.

the statement of bad performance of laptops is outdated i think.

you can plugin an extra screen and have a dual screen setup, which saves you the cost of an extra monitor (assumed you want to have 2 screens).

if you are 100% sure you will never move, yes go for a desktop, otherwise consider a laptop.

^What the? It would be stupid to get a laptop just because you are moving house. As stated the benefits of using a desktop are enourmus (especially when it comes to media production). I have tried both for a few years so i know what I'm talking about.

Only get a laptop if you are planning on doing lots of live performances.

What you really want is a desktop at home for production and a laptop as well for live performance.

End of.

hey bro,
i use a macbook pro and i havent had any problems with power or anything...i love it....i can always take it with me anywhere, on vacations, to the library, etc....with a pair of decent headphones you can fuckin make music on the bus home from work or school or whatever.....i would say save up for a macbook pro and you wont have any latency issues or any hardware issues and besides, if you do have hardware problem send it back to apple you will get it back in 2-3 weeks good as new....
unless you are building a sick studio room where you have bass traps all over the room and acoustical treatments everywhere, then save up for a G5 lol otherwise get yourself a laptop and you can really enjoy life when your makin music on a long trip to or from somewhere....
