Few things,
1st, make sure you did not change any of the power settings in the computer(Hibernation, Power saving)
go to the control panel > power settings icon and verify all the settings- it's very user friendly.
also, check if the problem remain whether it's on a battery alone or connected to ac power (without battery if possible)
overheating is possible of course but not necessarily it's coming from the processor-

some processors have protectiona against overheating so they shut themselves down. it couls be some harware issue. some laps use cooling systems like fans or similar. u might want to check those.. |

I had same problem with my laptop. I was using too many vsts at the same time and the cpu was working at 80-100% for hours and hours and eventually it couldn't take it any more. Does this problem occur only when you are using too many programs at the same time? Test your processor with "hot cpu tester". There is a trial version. |

this overheatingsystem looks gooood 
but i use my Laptop sometimes 14-16 houers to do music ...
Internet i don't have on it ... but could it be that i get a virus from a downloaded Programm i installed on the soundlaptop ?
and also mi will try Hot Cpu tester ...
but i think it's not Cpu ...
i opened like 4 delays , V-Station , Muon Tao , 9 Equlizers , 2 reverbs , and one voice sample with Vocoder ,Enigma ,Oversrive ,...
but i get a 3.1 Ghz and 1024 Mbram ...

same problem here too...
have P4 2.3GHz and 736DDR.....was great at the beggining, now it keeps turning off even 5 minutes after I use it.when i use normal windows tasks and listen to music there are no probs(unless visualisations are on while listening to music), but if I see a film or especially when using logic it doesnt work for more than 5mins.turns off by itself.
i just dont know what the source of this could be....if its the CPU or the windows or ?????its not a virus deffinitely..
if it is the CPU then what should i do???
pls if anyone has any ideas....it'd be very helpfull.

sorry for bringing up this topic again....just thought it could b helpful for some having similar probs if i tell u how i solved mine....quite simple tho:)
i got loads of helpful advices and options (thx 4 that) but none of them helped really.
the problem was the 5milimeters of dust and dirts on the processor that have been sucked by the fans. i cleaned it and ofcourse there are no more probs,it works perfectly now.
so, in case u have similar problems, b4 u buy new fans or reformat your laptops or reinstal windows etc. it could b useful if u take a look inside your processor and clean it thoroughly.
