laptop shutting off... any thoughts on why?

Hi Guys!

I'm using an Acer TravelMate 7720, and it seems this only happens when I'm working on music.... and has only happened twice recently.

In the middle of working, the laptop just shuts off. Screen goes black, and system just shuts down. When I restart, it doesn't say windows shut down unexpectedly, as it would after a crash.

I did a google search, and maybe I need to replace the fan. ??? Is there anything else it could be, and some signs to check for? The fan doesn't particularly sound overworked.... but I did have to take the computer in to be cleaned a few months back, because it did the same thing once or twice. At that time, the guy at the shop said it was just dirty. I'm thinking maybe I need to replace the fan. I asked him about it then, but he didn't think so.

Could the motherboard have a problem? Is there a way for me to diagnose these things?

Thanks!

Just realized this is probably in the wrong section, sorry. Was kind of worked up, hoping someone might have an answer.

I should have posted this under equipment, right?

Just started another thread in that section.....

+1 on overheating. Had the same issue with my first notebook.

At a certain temperature threshold windows shuts down automatically to prevent damage. That's why theres no "unexspected" shutdown...at least for your OS its unexpected

That was pretty much what I thought too, was just curious if there might another possible culprit.

I guess replacing the fan may be a good idea then?

I ask this, because I took the computer in a while back for the same issue. Then, the fan made a funny noise. Now, it just doesn't seem to be running any faster, even if the computer is working hard. My geuss is the fan is just not working right.

I'm really not an expert on computer hardware. Does anyone know if fans come in a standard size for laptops, or will it be specific for my model #, etc.? Any advice on a good fan?

Have a look to themperature of your CPU.
Your system will shutdown to prevent damage,
like Kryten wrotes. You can use Everest Home Edition:

maybe that's a software an error.

overheating.. that happend to my laptop.
it always shutted down after some time. total blank off.
the cpu colling plate was detached. I had to re-bend it and apply thermal paste

it works fine since then.

Thanks for the response guys!

I downloaded the Everest program, and it seems things are running normal. CPU temp is around 50c

But.... that's not while running Cubase, I haven't checked it yet. It only shuts off while running a heavy part of a song on Cubase, and even then, not all the time. So must be that the fan is not kicking in when the computer is taxed hard and needs it?

Well..... I think I will hold off until 2037, and get one of these to replace my laptop:

ahhh... ok, that 50c was not right. I have three readings on the page where CPU temp is listed, but the CPU is at 32celsius for the CPU.

The other two are WDC, one of which is at 37, and the other at 54

Taking away the battery fixed my problem.

Thanks a lot for the input guys!

Found a pretty easy walk through for cleaning the fan, etc. On youtube. Nothing I couldn't handle by myself. Went out to Offic Depot, and bought a can of compressed air cleaner.

Everything is working the way it should now.
