Hi ppl!

I have a doubt about laptops. OK, there´s two processors for laptops: the Intel Pentium 4 and Centrino. What´s the best one?

I know that Centrino has bigger size for cache memory(2048mb for Centrino and 1024 for P4), but P4 has a faster clock(Centrino goes max to 1.6 I think).

So what´s your opinion about it??? I think there´s no "best processor" but for what P4 could be better and for what Centrino could be better?

Thanks in advance...           LOADING...

I've just bought a Centrino laptop - 1.7GHz Dothan, with the larger 2MB cache. It's light, quieter than a P4 laptop, and very fast - I reckon it'll turn out to be faster than my 2.4GHz Athlon machine. I've read that the fastest Centrino (2GHz Dothan) outperforms the fastest 3.4GHz P4 laptop but I've not seen any figures or detailed comparisons myself.

I reckon the Centrino is better all-round than a P4 in every respect except cost - they're still a little more expensive than Pentium laptops. But they're great in the studio because they're fast and quiet and live they're good because they're fast and light, and can run for longer than a P4 if the power fails.

Just my $0.02!

What about AMD? isn´t it better than P4 or Centrino to make music (more stable)?

I´m gonna buy a laptop very soon, so this is very important topic for me, any more info on this subject is very good

Centrino based laptops with Intel chipset also have Wi-Fi support. And that counts if you want free Internet access when you're near offices or malls
And it also invented in Israeli Intel Branch. So it should be a better choice!          Everyone in the world is doing something without me

AMD used to get really hot but this has changed with more recent models. Heat is now no longer a problem with AMD.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Actually i heard that some of their newest models didn't pass the standards. They failed the heat tests and the prototype models returned to the development department.
It could be just a rumour but i was adviced to stay off the high-end amd64 processors for the moment.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

Personally I wouldn't touch Hewlett Packard machines with a bargepole... Got a link to the machines so we can compare them properly (screen res, HDD speed, etc)?           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Centrino gives out less heat emissions which results in it heating up less and much improved performance. It is also more durable and quieter.

A 1.5 Ghz clock speed on a Centrino is as much as a 2.0+ Ghz on a Pentium 4. (Dont know what the exact figures are)

Should go for Centrino if you can afford it and find it in the right laptop.

Peace:.

I've done some [b]very[b] basic testing (how much processing a Waves RVerb takes) of my 1.7 Centrino Dothan (laptop) vs. my Athlon XP2400+ (desktop - overclocked to 2600) and the laptop comes out faster.

I have no idea which is faster, a 1.7 Centrino or an AMD 3000... if you choose Centrino make sure you're getting one of the new Dothan range with the 2 MB cache as it makes a big difference. Centrino speeds now go up to 2 GHz which will blow any conventional processor up to 3.2 GHz out of the water.

As for HP, if you've already got one, go for it, I'm sure you'll be fine. I wouldn't buy one new for music though as they're very expensive for what you get, and come pre-loaded with software like AOL that can be difficult to remove and that can degrade the performance of your PC. Like I said though, if you've already got one, it should work ok.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering
