Hey guys.

Like alot of people, I have performance issues with Cubase. Enough instruments and my laptop crashes, freezes or bombs out.

I have a Fujutsu Siemens AmiloD 1845 P4mobile with hyper threading 3.33ghz 1GB Ram. Brought it new December 2004.

I want to buy a new computer. Obviously, I would rather a laptop so that I could move around but I dont want to have performance issues.

Do you guys think the new Pentium Core 2 duo (Merom) laptop will be any good or must it be a desktop? Also, does anyone here use laptop only for production?

lemme know.

Thanks...

desktop all the way, i had a lap top and it´s a pain in the ass not been able to install libraries or the psectrasonics stuff, besides i spend the half of what i could have spent on a lap top and my new machine it´s fast as hell.

i would never again use a lap top 4 music production, ill get one when i play live and maybe to lay some ideas but not as my main prod center.

i produce my music on laptop, mostly because of lack of dedicated space and the need to move constantly. i use cubase and it does well but i have to bounce to audio (which id do anyhow) and careful use of fx. i think the problem with laptops is less compatibility with external audio devices, so really think about the sound device when getting one. i have a echo indigo and for software only setups it really works! of course i plan to upgrade and buy a monster desktop pc with a firewire audio for studio use, and keep this lap for live performances and make music as the sun is falling at the beach (something hardware junkies will never get)

I have a Toshiba Sattalite P4 3.06 GHZ, 512MB RAM.
I got it for a steal but if I could turn back time I would go for a desktop system. Mainly for the added power, ease of epgrading, and as mentioned the connectivity to soundcards etc.
I've got an Edirol USB soudcard and I get some noise coming through all the time which I'm pretty sure is coming from either the hard disk drive or CD/DVD ROM drive. Maybe cus they're so compacted in together...? Best option is to have both, one for in the studio, the other for on the road to use as a sketch pad and for DJing.

Thanks for the advice.

Im sure the time will come when laptops will be as powerful and compatible as desktops (or at least powerful and compatible enough). I kinda wish that time was now, but i guess the best thing to do is to buy a cheap desktop and keep waiting.

Anyone know of any music production related benchmarks? I guess one of my problems has always been heat. When my laptop bombs i feel it underneath and its usually pretty damb hot. Apparently, heat is reduced substantially in these newer chips. thoughts?
