Hey ppl...

Do anyone knows wich kind of trasnfer is faster on a laptop?? The regular 4 pin firewire that came with most laptops, or getting a PCMCIA card with 6 pin firewire conection???

I have a big problem using my M Audio FW 410. Tried many tweaks, registry ones... And I guess it´s incompatibility problem.

So I would like to know if PCMCIA cards are ok for making music...

Thanks!

The difference is only in that 4-pin sockets don't carry power, whilst 6-pin sockets do. I have used both onboard 4-pin FW sockets and PCMCIA FW cards with my laptop and FW-410 and they have both worked fine.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

I have heard many, many people complain about problems with the FW410, enough to convince me not to buy one. It seems like it is probably a driver problem with relation to the motherboard and firewire port, but it is hard to say.

So you MIGHT have better compatibility with a PCMCIA FW card if your current setup gives you trouble, but there's no way to be sure until you try... do you know a friend that you can borrow one from first before you buy?

Also, the bigger firewire ports are preferable simply because the physical connection is more sturdy. The tiny little plugs fall out easily during live sets if something gets bumped.

But yeah, speed-wise, no difference.

Hey Colin... But at M Audio´s site, they say even if 6 pin socket, u need the AC Power. Right?

And Meta: I´ve searched for compatible PCMCIA cards here(there´re only 2 that M Audio say is ok), but no lucky. I also have a friend who has it, but it´s not even the same as we have now for buying.... So, it would be again "MIGHT have better"... Not for sure... As far as I don´t have much performance loses, I will try to find a compatible "generic" PCMCIA card!

Btw, my problem is when monitoring/recording analog inputs. When playing a guitar for example, suddenly the monitor freeze! Only a constant noise.

I tried the soundcard with others computers, and worked fine.           LOADING...

6-pin sockets supply power; 4-pin sockets don't. A PCMCIA FW card might need an external power supply to provide power down the cable, as I don't think PCMCIA cards can draw enough power from a laptop's PIC buss to provide FW power; mine is like this. In this case you might as well use the AC adaptor that comes with the soundcard.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Many external soundcards and harddrives simply require an external power supply no matter which FW cable you use. Maybe it's because there is no enough power in the FW bus.

Both my ext. harddrives and ext. soundcard are like this. I've heard that only ext. harddrives that do not require external power supply are the ones that have 2.5" disks inside... (which I have here, and it doesn't have powersupply...)
