Hi

I´ve got a laptop the harddisk goes 4200RPM, and also got a Lacie USB harddisk, USB 2.0, and spins at 7200RPM...

I got all my data (like movies, musics, documents, etc) in the external harddisk, so that laptop one is almost empty, and my programs are all installed in the laptop harddisk toguether with the samples...

Now my question is...should my samples folder be at the external harddisk?

Ok it spins faster than the interal, but will USB 2.0 respond at a speed that conpensates to use the external one? (hope you understand my question)

Anyone here uses USB 2.0 esternal harddisks for theis samples?

Its not that I need space or nothing like that, I just want to know which one is the fastest. Also if someone knows any tipe of benchmarking test I could run to see which is fastest that would be great

Thanks

You've got the right idea. Samples on an external drive separate from the system drive. Same thing goes for desktop systems too... do a search for the "HD split" topic that raged a while ago.           http://soundcloud.com/aeon604

That's how i do it..This way you don't have gigabytes of data on your laptop drive..The samples i end up using in tracks just get automatically imported to the cubase project folder (there's an option in cubase that allows you to do that automatically)           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

Maybe save as project ?
That's what it's called in Logic, must be something similar....

Well i remember Colin gave this tip somewhere..In SX3 go to file -> preferences -> editing-audio --> check the boxes "copy files to working directory & "convert & copy to project if needed"

Enjoy!           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

yes but...if the audio files go automaticly
to the cubase folder dosnt it mean that now your using your audio samples from the internal hardisk of your laptop?

because the idea is that anything that is audio should be on an external hardisk or a separate one from where your sequencer is
in order to avoid your computer from crashing...

No dude personally for me it makes sense to have the files i'm using in my project on my internal harddisk..I don't want to have to carry my external harddisk everywhere..This way i can work on my project wherever i go with my laptop..
The idea is not to store tons of sample CD's on your hardisk which take up a lot of space..Having a few .wav samples doesn't hurt!!           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

o.k....i hope your computer dosn't crash....
besides carrying an external hardisk isnt that heavy.
i think still check it out, from what i learned using your audio samples on the same hardisk where your sequencer is...is heavy on the computer and might cause problems.

Well i don't know where you heard this but personally i find the .wavs don't take up much space at all & i've got a fast laptop (centrino 1.86ghz, 1GB RAM)

So i don't see why having a couple of MB .wavs on my computer will make it crash?!           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

look....i give u an advice....u want...use it...u dont want....dont use it....
all i am saying is check it out and find out about the topic abit more before u have decided that this is the way your going to work with your audio...the fact that your wave files dont use much space dosnt mean the computer handles the real time playback of them whyle they are on the same h.d of your sequencer in an easy manner.
