I have used HP's, Sony's, Dell's, Toshiba's, and IBM's. Of this lot, I believe that Toshiba's are the best in quality vs. price, and design features. This is in no way an analytical experiment. Rather, I come in contact with all sorts of computers in my job, and the problems they have. Over time, you establish an opinion based on your experiences with them.
HP's and Sony's are very proprietary, which is a big reason I stay away from them. Dell's & IBM's are good, but I find the quality varies, as it seems they frequently are looking for places to cut corners. I found the Toshiba's to all be of good quality, & they definitly have more of an elegance to their internal design & asthetic.
All this being said, any Core Duo will be a good processor, it all comes down to the stability of it.

i just ordered a Acer ferrari (1005MW). I think it kicks OK ass, but i have to check it out first. specs looks very good tho. Its very lightweight - 1.6kilo with 3cell battery, 1.85 kilo with 6cell battery.
price in dollars is around 2000$ for the model i ordered.
this one with 2gb ram http://www.acer-euro.com/ferrari-line/ferrari1000/ferrari-spec.html
Happy hunting!

avoid centrino, sempron, or p4 (desktop edition)
they either are made for exclusive outlook express use and dvd playing or they just heat too much!
go for a core 2 duo with a dual channel chipset,
i think you will do just fine

baba i don't think vaio is good.......
i'll suggest you to go for Apple Macbook pro.
it's much more trust worthy than a PC
and if Mac doesn't fit into your budget then go for HP or any other brand but still i'll say a big no to vaio
peace!

The Sony VIAOs have a inherent problem. After some time, it does not start. You have to get it fixed to get it back working. I have seen 2 friends who had a VIAO go through that. And its not some cheap fix.
go for a large monitor for sure .. i agree with the dualcore recommendation too ..

toshiba indeed, i've had mine for over a year, and yeah it ain't duo core, just intel M 1.86 ghz. great for live performances and on-road production... so far it has been the outmost reliable.
as far as mac's go, i've seen them acting weird, skip the beat, and one even froze during live pa... new mac lapps have the same intel-core as pc's, so a lot of musical software (last i checked) weren't compatible with it...
