Based on my research, I've configured the following notebook but BEFORE i buy, i'd like to get comment.
Intel® Pentium® M 770 2.13GHz 2MB L2 Cache 533MHz FSB
Intel® 915PM + ICH6 Chipset
1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 533MHz - 2 x 512MB
Extreme Performance (RAID 0) - 160GB (80GB x 2) 7200 RPM SATA
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200 b/g Wireless Card
256MB NVidia® GeForce™ Go 6800
One possible problem I see is that these machines do not have PCMCIA slot and I was planning to use E-MU 1616. They now have something called an "Express Slot" which is supposed to be smaller and faster and more widely used in the near future. So I may have no other choice than to use a firewire interface for now (although the Intel® High-Definition Audio on-board has 24bit/106kHz). Still, I will need the hardware interface for firewire connectivity to MIDI devices I think.
Anyone see any major problems with this setup?

It's Alienware, so mucho $$$$. I can't find notebooks that come with Pentium M 770 equivalent or higher. You have to spend more $$ to configure yourself. Vaio comes close but factory comes with 740 or 750 I think.
I've been pondering this months now. I have an E-MU 1616M card ready to go now just need to decide on the machine.

What about the Area 51 m 7700 with Pentium® 4 660 Desktop Processor w/ HT Technology 3.6GHz 800MHz FSB 2MB, 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 533MHz - 2 x 512MB, and 160GB (80GB x 2) 5400 RPM SATA (RAID 0).
Is this overkill? This machine will be nearly $3,000 US and will ruin me financially. On the other hand, I don't want to have to make excuses for what my PC can't do. I want to be close to my desktop AMD 64 3200+ w/ socket 939 and 1GB OCZ Dual Channel RAM.
This is a big decision and I am having a hard time finding a notebook with Pentium 770 or equivalent.
I MUST have Cardbus Type II slot cuz i already bought my E-MU card.
Please help.

why don't you check out www.dell.com it'll cost you much less and you can still configure it to your liking..Instead of wasting $3000 on a laptop you should buy a $1500 one and use the extra money on other studio equipment..

Every computer is limited regardless of its power...it will always eventually crash...
3000$ for a laptop! Thants really WAY TOO MUCH if you want my opinion...I would definetelly buy cheaper computer and invest in more audio hardware...monitors, synths, fx units whatever...
Besides....your computer in a year will be worth shit, your top of the range 770 processor will be an old outdatted processor and you´ll feel quite frustrated every time you pass a computer shop and check prices lol...with audio hardware its not the same story...prices don´t drop like that (unfortunatelly for us! )
Well, my opinion only |
