hi guys!

just bought a secondhand laptop and was wondering how to access the bios??...
i know u usually press a key (F-something or del. etc) during the POST screen, but laptops dont do the power on self test thang... (at least not on this one!)... just says 'starting windows 98'...
are there any laptop owners among us??
its a toshiba satellite 4600 if that helps...
thanx in advance!

bios is motherboard dependant, i've seen laptops that had to be pressed on Del key for accessing the BIOS but it varies, man.
i suggest you to use the manual (or download the manual)
because in the manual they usually write this stuff, at the beginning.

BOM.

or you can cheat and take the battery out, and it'll give you "checksum error, BIOS defaults loaded, press F1 to continue or Del for setup" in 90% of the cases.

the motherboard battery, not the laptop one... you'll have to re-enter the time/date too though.

ummm, it wont blow up or have some other critical meltdown if i remove the bios battery will it?? :)
... just sounds like a risky thing to do...

Hi Reece,

How are you doing? :) Behold...

As with most desktop PC's you can view and alter various settings in your laptop's BIOS.  These settings control the basic operation of the machine.

UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING WE STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU LEAVE ALL BIOS SETTINGS SET AT DEFAULT.

That said there a couple of tips and helpful bits of info you may need.

The most common question we're asked is "how do I get into the BIOS of my machine?".  This varies, but in general you will have to press a key as the laptop starts:

Toshiba - press ESC and then F1 when prompted

IBM - press F1 or ESC

Compaq - older models F10, newer models F1

If the Compaq BIOS software is not loaded on some older Compaq's you cannot access the BIOS.  Likewise on some older Toshiba's you need to install TSETUP, which can be downloaded from Tosh's US web site.

Other machines require different keys or combinations, F2 and Del are both common.

Take care :)

Mike.
