I have been producing music for 5 years, and now I am ready to start talking to lables about releasing my music.
I have been talking to this local Portland Lable, they are going to pay me for my music.
"Jungle Entertainment"
I was wandering what is a base cost for a Exclusive contract for a song?
( what should I charge him? )
Is this also including a percentage from each album or is that just a Big time lable thing?
I am also doing custom made tracks for him and his other acts, for example I am writing an R&B track for this other guy to sing over.
Should I be charging more for this?

GyPsynate - charge for quality... but as you say its your "first" job? you always have to give to get.. remeber that...
i say do it cheap, but work hard, it will lead to more jobs, and as you grow and as your reputation grows you can charge more....

I would say make sure you get the credits and royalties for the music you are writing for someone to sing over.
Make sure you register with your society - its ascap in the US - The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers .
You never know you might just make the music to the next big R&B single and become loaded over night and drink crystal with pharrell williams
Or if you don't do all the legal boring stuff - someone will be drinking the crystal and you'll be kicking yourself

you can't get credits and royalties... If u choose royalties they could give u an advance on the royalties, but unless they are very sure it will be a succes they won't... u have to choose, or u take royalties and the money trickles in slowly and u might not earn a lot of money. or u sell the license (which is done most in the music scene) and u never get a penny extra, but ur sure that u will get the money and there is no hassle (if u have a record label with lot's of artists and u have to pay royalties for all of them, believe me it's a hassle and there will be things that go wrong, but u still have the rights to ur own music). The going price for a psytrance song is 100-300$ for a song of an unknown artist (depends on genre...) and for a known artist it all depends on his previous sales figures and how 'hot' he/she is at the moment. Most labels will not give royalties because of the enormous amount of work u have to do to keep ur bills in order...
If i were u i would sell the rights... Maybe if u get very known this will turn out to be stupid, but in 90% of cases this is the best way. |

I guess I didn't make myself clear - ofcourse I meant to register so that you get the mechanical royalties (which everybody has to pay but unfortunately from my experience most people don't in the trance scene).

Hey thanx for the Tips Tomek and FREGLE,Thats what ended up happening.I am going to sell him the "rights" to the music for a agreed apon price but I will still have the "credits" for it being my work.I am selling the music that I am producing for him for 2x the amount of what I selling him my older music for.If he wants a track that is done by one of my Group projects( me + 1 ) it go's up again.I am doing my music for less as a trade for helping me get all the printing work done for my older solo CD. |
