The agreement should be held.. And labesl only selling 20-50 copies of cd`s ? Then the label is failing to distribute the cds.. With the online comunity it is easy to get your work spread, but you must work (maybe more than before).. Advertising the right places, getting the cd known...

So many things the label can do.. And I dont think that only one online shop with exclusive distribution rights is the way to go....

I agree with you on that, last year a budy sold 27copies of his album in a party of about 300ppl. I think ppl are cold when it comes to buying from online shops.

I was also talking with a metal producer a couple of weeks ago, he told me that he has a band that got there fans to pay for the CD before it is produced. They put up a paypal service and they had about 500fans that donated each 25e so they gained more then 12000e, and that was currently paying their studio sessions and was also going to pay the design for the cover, pressing and shipping of the cd and dvd.

Of course you need a serious fan base to be able to do something like this, and maybe it's not a good solution for a psytrance project but i thought the idea was cool..

We're getting into another topic here... but in terms of alternate ideas to the standard model of manufacturing a CD and then selling it, here's another way of looking at things...

My experience is that people are accustomed to different modes of exchange depending on the medium of interaction. People are more accustomed to getting everything for free on the Internet whereas they might be more open to purchasing physical media in person, particularly if the release is somehow related to the event they are attending.

The way I operate my label reflects this "natural preference" of the marketplace. I'd say our biggest success so far has been the debut album from Ekoplex, released August 12th. Since then it has been downloaded 11,000 times and resulted in several gigs for the artist. We have also sold about 160 copies of the CD at various parties--not a large number, but pretty good for a release that we freely give away in CD-quality audio on the Ektoplazm web site, and certainly in excess of the 25 to 50 CDs some labels are reputedly selling!

This is what I mean by "fresh thinking" about these old problems that continue to come up in this business.

yeah it is a good idea, but you gotta have some real hardcore fans to give you 25e before you've even lay one note on the keybord.

but in the end i think it's a more revarding for them, they actually feel like they where part making the stuff happen.

And another good thing is that you can plan your budget to how much money you actually got in.

And also, if you ship only to your "true fans" and don't pass by a distributor, there is less chance a release group will end up with it. I think the true fans are less likely to give something that was handed to them with trust and care by the artists themselfs... or maybe not.. don't know, anyway it's a concept to meditate on.          On 2011-03-08 23:13, moki wrote:

Now, where is the true hardcore fans in this scene?

Wow this would reduce the number of release's greatly.

But even better just like now if you really believe in yourself and your music you could finance yourself even take out a loan and work. Kinda like going to college as investment in your future lifestyle.

Sooooo on a lighter note - time for the list to start?

AC/DC new album reached #1 in 25 countries, sold more than 800.000 in US alone.
Thatīs metal. And why they sell so much? I guess itīs good. Me, after years away from rock I am returning to it.

Now seriously, I would never pay a psy artist new album in advance. Why? simply because all my favorite artists just get worse and worse as time goes by. I was a huge fan of X-Dream, The Delta, Astral Projection and all the gods of trance. But I just canīt bring myself to listen - let alone buy - their last releases.
To my dismay this week I came to listen Chakraīs last album. My godness! I just canīt believe that that piece of cheese is from one of the best psy producers ever! Fluffy, pop, poor!
No wonder psy canīt sell. Who wants to buy bad music?

If you want to sell, and get paid, write good music.
Thatīs the recipe.
