I was wondering, as i have noticed lately not many labels are doing any promotion for the music they releaseing except some forum anouncements, their facebook page and barely that. They just keep pumping out releases after releases and complaining over that nobody are buying it, but wont spend a nickel on any sort of proffesional promotion.
I dont see the connection there.
Take Nano records, i see their promotion everywhere when they are releaseing something new, and i bet they are selling much better then all the other lables in this genre.
Iboga, Tribal Vision and few others are doing a serious job aswell regarding the huge amount of releases they have.
My point is, a lable that is releasing a new album, compilation or ep and only put a promo text on a couple of forums written down in a unproffesional crappy "english" text and hoping they are going to succeed should really concider hiring someone who knows how promotional work works. The labels that are doing that and putting some effort to make their new release reach as many people as possible are clearly the ones with most sales and good reputation.

cheers!

Professional promotion is the mark of a commercial product, but real psytrance is underground and not commercial, which means no professional promotion. So maybe those labels who don't use professional promo and are complaining that no-one buys their releases, don't really want people to buy their releases?           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

People pay tickets to go party cause artists have to get payed to play in a sound system that some company rent and get payed, and organizer win a lot of money...so where is the absense of commercial behaviors?           www.psychowave.net

I did not mean proffesional as in tv commersials or huge adds on busses and buildings. But "underground proffesional" as good as you can get for a psytrance label budget. There are many more options then just write a topic here and call that promotion, if you are creative and really wanna reach as many people as possible. I just got a feeling that most of the labels doesn't seem to really care of that anymore, mayby im wrong.

Lack of money.. a label shouldn't have that huge problem to cough up that small amount of money im talking about.

cheers!

Add Ultimae to the list of labels who know what they're doing. They seem to be releasing the right amount of music.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Dont most labels get run on a after-work basis ? So the amount of promotion is not much, but yeah i agree .. Many labels in the psyscene dont push their albums long enough I think, everything gets old too fast here :/            3o~ kriz aka krize 3o~ ....Horrordelic Records.... http://www.horrordelic.com

I hope Blue Hour Sounds survives. I think having a mix of genres on compilations is awesome, it also ensures that the "label's sound" doesn't get old and tired too fast.

I think you're setting up for success if you have:

1) Good tracks by good artists
2) Artists that are well known in the community
3) Artists that get booked (huge promotion)
4) Fresh ideas for album concepts and art
5) Know how of promotion

Imo some might be overlooking something like Ektoplazm as a promo tool. If a known label puts together a decent free release it should get several thousand downloads.          http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

These are the only "people" that I can think of that promote it properly, even though I can recommend triskele more than the rest cause I actually see work from them...

I have also had your experience Wizack, it is very important to find the right label with pro marketing who hire someone who knows what they are doing. It is a good idea to ask a label what their marketing ideas are, and how they are planning to promote the sound they want to release.
As a matter of fact I will start a thread about this.

Even when you do this, and it sounds great, it has happened many times that it wasn't that serious as it sounded. New label, lots of ideas and happy toughts and after some time when they realize they will just endup like all the other new labels they cut-back on the promotion and all things that cost them money, when its actually there they should try spend some imo.

cheers!

+1000 Absolutely true !

I wonder if I will get any replies on the "how do labels promote their releases" thread I started, it would be interesting per se if labels were to discuss this and help each other out. That would help labels and artists...          Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:
