no. you just need to send your demo (finished high quality track!) to labels and you must waiting for answer from label which will like your track (if any)

Yes . Dont have to be signed in the label
But sure its should/Could be on this specific track of yours - Must be a contract ! , You know .. Nothing work today without 'Papers' ,
And then you 'Not allowed play it in a public' (5 Years or so) +/And some other labels 'Storys' Each one with his own requirements/Idea's .

I can't play my own original song, released with my own artist name in some label album? I feel something is really wrong in the music enterprise.. damn           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

I don't know who will ask you to sign such contract, and who will agree to sign it. Maybe in Hell Records...           http://www.youtube.com/user/ChichkeMultiTech

if you sign a contract with such points, then you will owe yourself.
sure that major labels are very restrictive agreement, which affect not only music but also the appearance of the artist and many more weird demands

theres no one kind of contract on this planet. sometimes you just filled your personal data

there is only one rule: read what you sign

Of course you can play your own music, unless you are stupid enough to sign a contract which says otherwise and I have never come across one.

A word of advice:

If a label is interested in your music and wants to publish it, don't say yes and amen. Ask the labels how they plan to promote your release. It also helps greatly to ask other artists who have previously released music on the label in question about their experience. How was the promotion? Was the overall experience with the label good? Did they rip you off?

Lastly, avoid anything affiliated with Thomas Vitali aka Psy Nina aka Sunstryk aka Plusquam Records, and all of its sub labels ...

I wish you good luck with your music!
