KoxBox: Psy-Legends in the Mix

Emerging from the heady-techno spasms of the early 90’s, KoxBox (a.k.a. Frank’e and Ian Ion) quickly became the gods of the emerging trance scene. Alongside Total Eclipse, Juno Reactor, Transwave and Eat Static, their music defined the re-emergence of 60’s psychedelia in the darkling undercurrents of the high-tech 90’s.

Jumping into fame as industrial techno hippies of the first-degree, Muzik magazine hailed the band as "probably the most in-yer-face psychedelic outfit ever.” As prolific dj’s and sound-engineers during the 80’s, Koxbox came under the spell of bands such as Kraftwerk and Front 242. These early stimuli showed in their unique style of trance and brought them to the attention of techno-prodigy Sven Väth, who signed them to his seminal Harthouse label. After releasing a host of tracks on Harthouse, Koxbox signed to the UK electronic label Blueroom in 1997. The same year saw the release of their influential album, Dragon-Tales, and the beginning of an illustrious touring career.

During ’98 Frank’e and Ian put their techno-wizardry and comprehensive studio talents to work on producing film soundtracks. Then, in the summer of '99, after some spine-tingling gigs on the international circuit, Koxbox released The Great Unknown on German trance label, Novatekk. Marking a radical departure from the traditional Koxbox style, the album confirmed that Koxbox were innovators with a penchant for crystalline production. It wasn’t long before The Great Unknown leapt out of the underground, becoming one of the best selling psy-trance albums of all time. One of the album tracks, “A Major Problem in Australia” became an international party favourite, breaking the band into more new markets.

After the stunning success of their album, Frank’e and Ian decided to break from the norm once more, entering funkier and more club-friendly territory with their Saiko-pod side-project. Moving into a new self-built studio in Copenhagen they began work on Phutures and Options. Released during 2002 on Spiral Trax (Sweden), and Solstice Music (Japan) and Sound Sorcery (Mexico), the album extended the band’s international acclaim and earned the duo kudos for their use and exquisite application of state-of-the-art technology.

Despite their successes, Frank’e and Ian decided that it was time for a well-deserved sabbatical from the music industry at the close of 2003. This was by-no means idle time for the duo, however. While Ian retained the Saiko-pod moniker, Frank’e decided to relocate the Copenhagen studio to Ibiza. Returning to the original Koxbox formula with the release of U-turn on Twisted records, 2006 saw the return of Koxbox as a force of psy-trance innovation. U-Turn’s clever merger of psychedelia, dark-techno and nu-skool earned Koxbox yet more critical applause. Hailed as “the most significant psy-trance album of the decade”, U-Turn marked the definitive return of Koxbox. With one of the most fully-booked rosters around, Frank’e was one of the most globally desirable and talented dj’s and live-acts of the 2006/2007 season.

Last seen in SA during the 2002 Total Eclipse festival, Koxbox will be making a long-awaited return to these shores on March 10. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience one of the hardcore stalwarts of psytrance culture live in the mix.

**~VENUE~**

Froggy Bay is a scenic inlet situated alongside the Theewaterskloof dam with 360º mountain-views, a grassy dance-floor (next to the dam), orchards, sandy beach-fronts (which means swimming!) a jetty and plenty of camping opportunities.

This venue is a real treat (as Arora party-goers can attest to!) and we are very lucky indeed to have it at our disposal in the middle of harvest season. Due to the value and sensitivity of the orchards we are asking punters to please stay out of them - there are plenty of other areas to camp and play in!

Once again, this promises to be the most scenic dancefloor of the season and, of course, we won’t be missing out on any décor opportunities! Come, bring your cosies & be-amazed.

DIRECTIONS

95km from Cape Town. Take the N2 from Cape Town, go past Somerset West and over Sir Lowry Pass. Turn Left at the Peregrine Farmstall onto the R321 towards Grabouw/Elgin. Turn Right on the R321 towards Villiersdorp. Drive 35km over Viljoenspass untill you reach the white bridge over Theewaterskloof Dam, after the bridge go straight for 3km and watch out for our signs on the right.

Yay... The line-up is sure gonna rock the dancefloor!

And Koxbox Live set will be good, but wait, he promise us that his DJ set will be rip-roaring! I've seen him play on two seperate occasions, once at Solipse and again at the Total Eclipse Party, and both times his sets were just amazing... true psychedelia!

It's time to move on to the next step in the psychedelic revolution. We've reached a certain point, but we're not moving any more.
