This one is really going to appeal to fans of the deep tech-trance sound. The songs roll along like little mechanical cogs, subtly shifting and changing, worming their way into your brain. Soon, you too will become a part of the industrial machine. The beats are precise. The bass lines are subtly groovy. It took me a few listens before I actually “got it”, if you know what I mean. The album is not high energy enough for my tastes, but it is well produced and infectious. Kompset doesn’t beat you over the head with sounds, screaming “Dance!” while pointing a gun at your feet. No. They allow you space and time to move within the sounds.

Without doubt Kompset belongs to the under-rated psytrance artist category, for sure they produce their own sonic universe which is situated out of beaten tracks based on fat, heavy percussive & diversified rythmic elements with also a special focus on dark, tribal, indus sounds & E.B.M+ tech/hardtek influences. The little fail would be the not always very trancey connected sounding result (tracks 2,3,5,6,9) that might be repulsive to an important part of usual psytrance stuffs listeners .
I would say without big certainty that Nitrate belongs to a most fullonish build up compared with the rest of the album, indeed i’d draw near to Phoetus – Groovy Symptomes style.
Flow sounds more traditionnal full on stuff but flat & boring.
Praetorious is tribal groovy.
Osama has an nice electric but repetitivegroove in it, unfortunatly i don’t catch on the orientalish electric guitar played melody.
There’s a good collapsing rythmic trick tone for the clap starting at 1’05. I find Inquiry also to be much tribal flavoured with this resonnating metallic rythmic element at 2’00 (if someone know the percussion’s name, would like to learn it ; Asian coppered tambourine : Gamelan ? ).
Like all Kompset’s production, Quem Falou ? has a particularly worked rythmic, this time you’ve got the brazilian touch, with a background samba/batucada background feeling for me; at 5’38 the 303 lines happens conferring a trippier atmosphere.
Kompset Leave us with an hypnotical indus fat rythmic groove, catchy if you’re tolerant to these sort of dull sounds , plus an unexpected asian tone for the melody on the end at 5’46.
Climax :1,7
Attractive tunes :5,8,9
If Kompset succeds in crossing the stage of better combinate their actual trademarks with a more psytrancey environnement without compromising their dull underground sonic textures, they should have normally their name growing soon but the equation isn’t easy though.

Kompset - s/t [Kagdila]
1. "Nitrate"
Pretty nice intro - just atmospheric stuff, but done pretty well. Bassline is pretty standard but there are changes in it that make it more interesting. There is this synth sound that's a bit annoying, but there is some great swirly stuff going on that makes this track generally entertaining.
2. "Down Effects"
Nice change gets things underway a couple of minutes in. Not much going on until then. Squawky monotonic synth sweeps up & down. A change in bassline.. nice bass patch. Dunno about the high end though... glad that repetitive synth sound fades out. Some pretty nicely tweaked vocal samples at the end of the fourth minute.
3. "Koncept"
Doesn't seem to be a lot going on in this one. The swirly thing's happening again, but not as dense & effective this time. There are these really dirty pads playing quite simple melodies that just don't seem that enthralling to me. Gotta say I didn't think much of this one.
4. "Flow"
Starts off pretty nicely. Kinda minimal. Doesn't really do much for me though, just didn't grab my attention. It is quite an epic track mind you.. I quite like it, I just think it needed something at the end to really round it off.
5. "Natural"
There's this hideously annoying synth sound that just keeps going on & on around the 4 minute mark. Almost made me skip to the next track but not quite. Some nice background noises.. if heard in the forest it would prob'ly sound like the surroundings were breathing.
6. "Osama"
Bassline rolls along, some pretty nice layering of slightly hypnotic synth swells. Pretty groovy in a way. Some good use of repetition in the synths - they sit far enough back not to get annoying, but close enough to give you something to unconsciously sway to.
7. "Inquiry"
Nice pitch shifting & spacialising of the drums before the groovy little tinkling melody kicks in at about 3 & a half minutes. Wow, great synth sound just after 4 minutes.. I like this one! Very groovy track. Shame about the bassline - not very inventive, but you can't have it all I guess. Gets a little boring by the end.
8. "Quem Falou?"
This has some samples in it from the movie 'City of God'. Very funky guitar stuff. Pretty nice build & percussion in this track. Some pretty mindless tweaking towards the end leaves me thinking, 'damn I am bored of reviewing this CD.. why couldn't they finish the track better?'
9. "Leave"
Great percussion in this track. Very funky. Pretty nice techno-ey sound about 2 & a half minutes through. My favourite track so far this one. Kompset CAN write groovy music, but they just need to tell more of a story with it. Yep full credit for this track, it's a good one.
Pretty good on the whole. Will be interesting to see what they write next. Got hopes for this artist.
