First of all its very nice thread with good points.

Instead of putting names of labels that do pay the artists, which there is an enormous amount of labels and most of them do, put a list of labels that don't pay.

We always pay our artist even if it can take some time before payment arrive from the distribuetors. Thats why contracts are signed and so on.
And its different from artist to artist.
Some artists dont want any payments up front and waits til we get payments before they get what thet was promised, and then we have artists that want money before release. Its fine by us.
Big respect to all artist..

well, because there are so many threads upfront with complaints about labels who don't pay i wanted to remind everybody that there still are labels left which are trustworthy. it seems the whole sonic dragon records family is very trustworthy (covers a vast range of different psy sounds) since i can vouch for faerie dragon too as PUF
i've had good experiences with:
-faerie dragon records PUF
-exogenic records PUF
-creative space records PUF
-interchill records PUF

hm...not bad topic BUT reg. paying up front or after release (it depends on contract and agrement from you and label and label and artist policy of making bizz)- it doesn`t really matter is it upfront or after if you get payed so i think you should concentrate on labels that PAY and labels that DON`T PAY instead of this.
we had gr8, good and bad exp. with labels.
trance labels that pay on time without trouble and delayes and do the bizz very profesionaly- tribalvision, chaishop
tech labels that pay and do it profesionaly - BEEF, PlayOutRightNow rec., hadshot
trance label that DON`T pay - groove control /spliff music (stay away from them - we still didn`t get money for release year ago and never will, didn`t even get copy of CD - it shows everything and i know similar exp had some other artists and good friends)
generaly - if you give your track to some too burned from druges hippie that just opened label cos its cool to have label and he must have labels so he can be cool and that thinks runing the label is easy you will get burned for sure.
most of this new psy labels are runed by ppl that aren`t able to be newspapir salesmans or ppl to who you woudn`t give your dog for a walk in park - and they think that they can run the labels.
best way is to send your tracks on proper big old(er) labels that have lot of releases, lot of artists satisfy and good reputation. for new labels you should always ask for money upfront - whan you get money you send them master track or to put it simple - "cash and carry" so you will be sure you won`t be burned. |

thanks ocelot for starting and everyone else for supporting.
Colin, you say right things of separating risks, but actually that's not the way it works in practice. sure an artist did his job when a track is finished and the label should pay him/her on this step; and the label should get its money when the label work is done.
but when it comes to releasing a cd, moreover when its about young artists and first releases, the will of releasing something is much stronger then doing things right =)
and some labels can use the artists ignorance for its own benefit.
