this is NOT a thread to bitch endlessly about the labels that suck ass or dont pay their artists etc...
This IS a thread about labels that are Known Good- these are labels that listeners should support as they are doing the right thing with regards to paying their artists...
this is promo for the good ones.
if they pay the artist money upon taking the track that is to be denoted with Pays Up Front or P.U.F.
if they pay the artist the agreed amount of money at some point in time after release as the money comes in that is to be denoted with PAYS or Proper or Sorted...
both are considered respectable. i understand some labels are very underground and some are run by artists themselves...it may not be possible to pay up front but proper payment in the end is a good respectable thing.
i understand that different artists may have different experiences with different labels at different times... please tell of your own experience only...
i will start:
Dropout Productions= P.U.F.
Peak Records= Pays Proper Sorted..
ManicDragon= P.U.F.
Sonic Dragon= P.U.F.
Insomnia Records= P.U.F.
Vertigo Records= P.U.F.
Phreex Network= P.U.F.
Element of Time= P.U.F.
Cosmic Theater= Pays Sorted
Mass Abduction Records= P.U.F.
Avatar Records= Pays Proper Sorted
Zaikadelic Records=P.U.F.
YSE= P.U.F.
ok i realize im being very very dangerous by starting this thread... also if i missed or forgot some label i will say now that its wrong of me to forget and i will add your name below to another post on this topic...
just blame it on me being a stupid idiot and i will happily apologize for being a dangerous asshole and i will correct it by adding your label name below if you pm me...
thanks!!

PUF is also the sound the sound you produce when you take small ones with a joint... puf puf.
ok, just wanted to be idiot...
WELL, it was about time someone started this one (way to go ocelot) and i believe that all artists (even big snobby-ones) contribute to this list.
This could turn really well; separating the worthy artist along with the proper labels / from the / wannabe(i don't care what i earn, i just want my traxx released)artists along with the crappy labels. leading them into 2 diffirent loops, the first accending and the second fading out.
one good action could be, if someone could sum up this list (let's say every 1-2 months) in order NOT to search 145 pages in this thread to find what u want.
again.. bravo ocelot.

What happens when a label that you listed as PUF is PAYS for someone else?Even worst what happens when a label that you listed as PUF or PAYS is NON PUF or NON PAYS for someone else?
Good try but this can evolve to a very complex issue, just imagine someone who will pop up and name Spliff Music as PUF LOLOLOLOL
P.S I thought i was one of the very few that used to be pay his artists upfront (very upfront most of the times unfortunately or not) but it seems that fortunately i am not part of a secret society or something.

good thinking. points taken.
i basically regret this thread because however much i would like to get a list of known good ones to praise, there are always different experiences with different artists with the various labels...
my two tiered system was also not very fair to artist owned labels - many like Peak and Avatar are living from the music same as me and its often difficult to have the money upfront while others who pay later are simply not caring so much...
i guess we are back to intention again- and the general vibe- both of which are hard to categorize...
if a label says "fuck you i dont pay" then thats obvious but there are many grey areas.
for example promo copies (personal to keep) releases...
i apologize for trying to quantify this sensitive area
but i stand behind my kudos to the labels i mention above.
I must also add the following labels to Paid Sorted

i think the best way if to pay the artists
before release like my label does
its the most profetional way, cose u get the respect of ure Artists and u also no need to think if i lose what happens u take all the risk.....hope all labels understand to steel music just to make some bucks,is beter for me to jump from a brige,

I agree with Moonsun. Artists already take enough of a risk spending months writing tracks when they could be spending that time earning money in a full-time job. If a label then wants to release those tracks, it's because they believe they will sell and make a profit*. If a label believes their releases will sell and make a profit, they should have no problems getting together the money to pay the artist up-front for their work. If they don't think the release will make a profit they shouldn't be releasing it in the first place!
In this scene the advance is the artist's only guaranteed income from a release, and is calculated by the label on the basis of the artist's royalty percentage and the release's expected sales. If a label is releasing a track but doesn't want to pay for it, they're either laughing at the artist, or bad businessmen/women. Either of these is bad news for both the artist in particular and the scene in general.
*A label should take its profits AFTER paying artists what they are owed. Anything else is bad business.

basically you are saying that the main/only goal to release music is to make profit ...
I strongly disagree ... the main goal to release music should be : promoting an artist, promoting a certain style of music ... of course without losing any money ...
but the profit itself should never be the main goal !

I'm not saying that at all, but this thread is about labels who do/don't pay their artists, after all.
Profit is not the main goal from releasing music - you can do this either with a label or by giving it away from your website. However profit is one of the goals in running a business - which is what a record label is, and what this thread is about.
Like many producers I'm sure, we don't make music with the aim of making money from it. That's the last thing on our minds when we're in the studio - all we're thinking about is the vibe on the dancefloor. However if we're going to sell our music, then for sure money becomes an issue and we'd be fools to ignore how the business works. Everyone needs money to survive, and if you're going to spend your time making music rather than working in a regular job you need to know how to make your music make money for you. That doesn't take away from the reason you're making music in the first place.
