Hey! I'm about to buy a new computer and I've made my mind up about most of the components. However, when it comes to what RAM-memory to choose I'm still confused. I'm a 100% newbie when it comes to musicproduction so I'll only do software until I feel that I know all the basics (which probably will take quite some time beacause programs like Cubase are obviously very complex).
So what RAM-memory do you advice me to buy? I'm considering about those 2 models:
1) Samsung 1024MB DDR PC3200, 400MHz 184-pin
2) Kingston 1GB 400MHz DDR PC3200 ECC DIMM 3-3-3 (Standard 128M X 72 ECC 400MHz 184-pin Unbuffered DIMM (SDRAM-DDR, 2.6V, CL3, Gold))
Maybe it will be a help for you to know the specifications of my computer (I've not bought it yet but I'm 99% sure it will be like written under):
SOUNDCARD: something from M-Audio (delta 66, delta 33 or delta 1010LT) or E-MU 1212M
MOTHERBOARD: Asus K8N-E Deluxe
HARDDRIVE: 1 X 80Gb for windows and applications, 1 X 200Gb (Seagate Barracuda, 7200rpm ATA) only as cubase's source.
PROCESSOR: AMD Athlon 64 3400

Thanks for the ultraquick reply, WAVELOGIX! So if both are 400Mhz (PC3200) and with 1Gb of memory, why is it that the kingstoncard still is preferable? It's a little bit more expensive than the samsung... |

you could also take a look on the CL of the ram, lower CL is better as a general rule, but it doesnt make a huge difference (I guess they are both CL3).
btw. IIRC the kingstons have lifelong guarantee.
well, after all, if you dont buy noname and have the correct speed like DDR400 you cant do much wrong (Except for paying too much of course )

karmaceuticals: what's CL? the only think I think about when I hear CL is "champions league" but that's football hehe
Trip-: are you saying that micron, ocz and corsair are better than kingston? is it really so? i've read many posts where people recommend kingston. |

okay, now I'm even more confused. I searched for corsair memorycards and some of them are at speedrate "PC3200XLPRO". I understand that PC3200 is 400mhz but what's this XLPRO all about? Will it work on a regular asus motherboard with support for PC3200? |

And I have one more question. Is there any more benefits, than saving memoryslots on the mobo, if I choose a RAM memorycard with 1Gb capacity instead of 2 * 512Mb? |

I'll buy a "Asus K8N-E Deluxe" motherboard with support for PC3200, PC2700, PC2100, PC1600. I want 1gb of RAM memory, with the aim to become a fast and stable computer for musicproduction. What memorycard would you choose if the money is no issue? Or maybe you would choose a completely other motherboard with support for even faster memorycards? If so, the mobo may not be toooo expensive (with that I mean not much more than 350$ / 225 EUROS for the mobo)
(it would make me extra glad if you not only mention the brand but also the model. and as you might know, Santa likes it when people have been good so maybe he'll consider giving you something extra nice if you've been good to me )

These should do the trick:
-- Kingston DDR SDRAM / 512MB x 2 (1GB) PC3200 DDR CL2 (HyperX)
-- Corsair DDR SDRAM / 512MB x 2 (1GB) PC3200 DDR CL2 (TWINX1024-3200LL)

Thank you for your advice, Undertow! I still wonder what the disadvantages would be if I choose 2 * 512Mb memories instead of 1 * 1Gb. Kingston have some 1 * 1gb memories...
Come on, come on... keep 'em coming, people! |

Will my "Asus K8N-E Deluxe" mobo with support for PC3200 handle those "DDR CL2 (HyperX) and "DDR CL2 (TWINX1024-3200LL)" features? On kingstons homepage I chose which motherboard I'll buy and then I got a list of the kingston memories that will fit my mobo. But the hyperx thing were not there Here is the link http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator/modelsinfo.asp?SysID=18860&distributor=0&submit1=Search <- the list of the Kingston memories that is compatible with my asus mobo. If this hyperX thing won't work to 100%, do you think I should buy another mobo instead? Which one should it be then? I'll buy an AMD Athlon 64 processor so it has to be compatible with that. |

get 1x 1gb, then u can get another gig anytime.
check mobo homepage and check the BEST ram for ur mobo (send email if u can't find info)
and there are also other very good brands like twinmos, but kingston and samsung are very good too. i used both and both were without any problems.

Hi, I wouldnt care about that site, it will work (I'm 99,995% sure . Anyway, there is no Ram with a CL lower than 2,5 on the list, this means the list is missing a lot of stuff(your mobo can handle that for sure).
about the CL, isnt it enough to know that lower means (a bit) faster?
personally I never would buy this hyperX ram, IIRC it's more for overclocking and getting the last bit of power out of your PC....for a lot of money, compared to normal ram. I would get normal ones, Kingston DDR400 CL2,5 and save the spare money for some nice Monitors (the Audio ones )
I'm sure you wont feel a difference in speed, maybe it's 2 seconds slower when encoding a big divx file or so, but imho not worth the money for a normal music pc.
the difference between 1 and 2 ram modules is that the mobo can access 2 similar ones in dual channel mode (it has 2 memory controllers, one for the first 512mb and another for the second).
now, this can really speed up your pc for virtually no money, especially the A64 would be happy about that
OH NOES, your board hasnt got Dual Channel, I didnt say anything
better get 1 1GB Module then.
k, enough confusing for today |

How much do you think you can save on this? I can get 1Gb of Corsair CL2 ram for 189 euro. The CL2.5 one is 170 Euro. You are not going to get alot of monitor for 19 Euro.

For one it will make your computer more stable, also you can lower the PCI latency and your memory access will be faster. My current projects all run at 70-90% cpu. Any gain in speed is welcome.
Don't forget that going from CL 2 to Cl2.5 is a 25% increase in memory latency. With all the memory intensive stuff we use (reverb, delays etc), I think this is worth the extra 19 Euro.
