Hi,

I don't spend much time on the net or in forums just not enough time ( I'm self employed working hard as fuck all the time just so I can work less later..) anyway.. recently I lost a hard drive which pretty much had everything I had created or worked on Since getting back into producing Jan Last year after a hiatus since Logic went MAC only.
blah blah blah don't feel bad. I had a new ssd sitting on my desk so it was my own fault... Close to 260gigs and I got back under 40....
But It's given me a chance to step back and approach from a different angle..

Music background Brass starting with Alto Sax then the Trombone and lastly Trumpet where I earned and held first trumpet for many semesters

Anyway to my questions and to me no question is stupid so if they are beneath you .. don't say anything.

1: when creating do you think in terms of 16/32/64bars or 3 mins
time?

2: when you create are you mostly shuffling around pre-made
scratch? You know lay out some loops get a flow going then mold away or do you start from scratch each time?
me I'm loop free, so other then the midi's I've created or the waves I couldn't transcribe for a rmx it's always new. well, at-least for me

3: Midi, automation, and modulation just for modulation's sake
The Midi, OK. Automation, OK. But modulation get's me stumped more so as I get confused by things like modulating at rate.. Or It get's out of hand and I loose interest in the patch .. Yeah I know I can wire a 65tap stereo reverb together in Scope but routing a nice patch on Bazzile or similar stumps me I also don't get prolonged sessions at 1 time usually 1 maybe 1 and half hours a day and then sat night to sort thru all the scratch I did all week ..
So if anyone knows of a good resource for this It would be appreciated.. I have done some tuts but maybe a modular synth just isn't me ..

Well that's it I merely want to understand where everyone is at so I can come into my "sound" or "grow" without badly copying you or you and yeah you over there.. and oh yeah you... with your super kicks

Cya

Oh yeah the statement of there are no rules.. should be Yeah no rules as long as your finish is like those guys on the top 20 list ...

hy srry bout ur drive, shitz happened to me2 once way back knw how it feels, whats imp doesnt happen again n keep backups, as production n workflow can vary to what comes natural to u but for me
1. i try not to think in terms of bars or minutes, but rather feeling, in production/arrangement stage like nething in life think best decisions made feeling over mind
2. i try to avoid loops esp synth loops so it is u who are making the track n melodies not the loops, but i find percussive loops sometimes useful
3. srry not familiar with bazzile

Hey, sorry to hear bout your loss, but i guess we all are subjects to such disaster, so we must consider different ways of backing up our files - since i'm on reason, and my projects are very small, compared with the ones based on audio, i keep all of my projects in a cloud (drop box, g-drive etc) to be safe.

regarding your questions.
1. personally i do not think in terms of bars or minutes, what i focus more is about the musical phrase or sentence, it might be 16/32/64, might also be 12, 17, it depends on a sentence ant than on where it leads, is it necesarry to repeat it or does it ask for something else to happen. but i do not make trance and musical phrases tend to be quite long and it usualy takes 16 bars to 32 to complete the phrase.

2. For percussion i often fuck up premade loops, but do sometimes start from kick and bass and build the groove around that, it depends on the mood and current state of creativity actually, and not more than that. I see building effective percussion as my weak point, where i struggle the most. As for other instruments, i neve use premade material, though sometimes i might trigger synths or arps gate or some other stuff with a premade percussion loop in octorex to steal the groove

3. Since i'm on reason, cant say anything usefull about the stuff like bazzile and such.

Goodluck!

Thanks for the replies

I asked #1 because I try making phrases or question/answers based on feeling which tend to be longer/shorter then 8/16/32bars. when one looks to tuts 99% are 1-4 bar based with duplicate with change few notes/percussion positions.. I was checking making sure it wasn't just me

#2 I asked about loop use merely because I grew sick of loops after being a tester of SF Acid from beta to v5.. If your loops are well organized putting full songs together every couple hours would be easy..
So I decided to look for some free usable loops and wow I was surprised at all the good usable and some even previously paid collections that one can download for free these days ..

#3 Yeah from U-he But I just found Sonigen so I'm gonna try playing with it the next few days see what happens..
