Now I don't know about you, but one of the best "bass" sounds I get is when I flex a muscle in my inner ear... this enormous rushing sound comes in. I was informed by my music teacher that I was opening my Eustachian tubes, and what I was hearing was my own blood...! Later I found out that several other people could do it.

So here's a question: how many people here can get "in their own blood"? Sounds like wind or an overdriven bass amp, if you're uncertain...           tiger got to hunt,
bird got to fly,
man got to sit and wonder why, why, why?
tiger got to sleep,
bird got to land,
man got to tell himself he understand.

I can also make this sound. I can tell you that it is definitely not the sound of blood moving in your vessels. If it were, the sound would be pulsatile.

If I had to guess, I would say this sound was from you tensing one of the tiny muscles inside you ear. For example, there is a muscle attached to one of the bones in your ear (malleus) called the tensor tympanii. Contraction of this muscle makes your ear less sensitive. This muscle involuntarliy contracts when one experiences or anticipates a loud sound.

There are other muscles in and around your ear, too. The stapedius is also attched to one of the bones (the stapes). Maybe the muscle tissue around your eustachian tube, or in your throat?

Anyway, let me tell you the reason I think this is so. Go into a real quiet room. Put your ear against your shoulder. Now push your shoulder against your ear, as hard as you can. You should hear the same sound!

I don't quite understand... are you saying the sound comes from filtering other sound? Or that the muscle tissue itself creates the vibration?

If it's the first case, dead quiet brings the sound out just as well.

I tried your technique in a quiet room (my closet actually ), and the sound is different... soft and more continuous. What I normally hear... well, I should have called it thunder and not wind, but it's kind of a pulse-rumbling sound. It seems to be tied rhythmically to the heartbeat (Ron, try feeling your pulse while doing it)...           tiger got to hunt,
bird got to fly,
man got to sit and wonder why, why, why?
tiger got to sleep,
bird got to land,
man got to tell himself he understand.
