I'm far from a professional in the psy scene but recently i made loads of sharp stabby sounds with pretty much every synth i have experimenting with low end thud and higher up clicky/squeaky/ glitchy sounds. Then I thought long and hard about how i want my kick to sound, then just built it. No compression, just eq! I think the bottom end was an ES 1 and then I think the only other sound i layered was from the stomper, which i then high passed.
Its damn satisfying making ya own kicks too. And once u have a nice kick that suites your style, your basslines sound infinately fatter aswell!
Experiment, experiment, experiment. Then do some more of the same!

i create my own kick...
take a look at the Infected Mushroom website, they have a tutorial that show's you how to make a kick at the Soundforge.... the secret for the kick to be fat is the frequency of the wav (usually 60 hz),
after you did what the tutorial say you have to compress is a lot to get the Kick at the start of the sample...
link to the tutorial

don t compress just to compress , it s all depends what sound you have and the result you want.
eq your kick and your bass, send them to a bus and eq again and compress , it s the relation with the bass who make killer kicks, alone it s sounds shit sometimes . |

I usually cut heavily between 200-500 hz or so to avoid boxiness with synthesized kicks.
Software I use mostly is microtonic, reaktor, waves plugs (comps, eq and maxxbass) and vintagewarmer.
Layering synthesized kicks with other (realistic or not) samples is useful too. For example get the initial click from some real sample and synthesize the rest.
And remember to trim the kick so that it doesn't interfere with the bassline too much.

do u sleep with compressors also?
a compressor will never do an eq's job dont confuse them!
a nice kick must be nice without a compressor addind compressor must add to the nice kick more punchiness and loudness!
but a bad kick it will be bad whatever compression u add !
a good use of eq and comp with a nice kick sample is the way to go!

i will explain you what compressor's do to the kick,
befor you cmpress the kick that on "infected mushroom" tutorial it looks like this (look at the start of the sample:
http://img214.imageshack.us/my.php?image=befor3au.jpg
after compressing the kick you will get a start of the kick which looks like this:
http://img385.imageshack.us/my.php?image=after0dz.jpg
and that's make the kick sound's like a kick..
